I read an article about dogs being smart, using math and that they have emotions (while I don't like assuming that "human" emotions are the only legitimate ones, I understand that they are the only ones we seem to acknowledge in animals...this is still interesting...)
What I find very interesting is that, according to this study, the smarter breeds are the "newer" breeds...and explain why...AND the top 7 smart dogs listed? Of the seven, Poodles, Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers...stands to reason, for me anyway, that creating a "new" breed from two of the smartest breeds is, well, SMART! Doodles Rock! http://www.livescience.com/animals/0908 ... -dogs.html |

OKAY on a more serious note.........these doodles really are S M A R T
and quite inutitive as they mature. my dad swears MAX can think! I do know if i spent more time with Max and training he'd be much further along with tests for therapy work but for now i am content with the way he is and will soon make time for more training. i will say this: he catches on ever so quickly and the treat he gets he is praise and LOVES learning new things

I always hate it when I see Border Collie's as the smartest. The ones I have seen are usually hyper. BUT! I also have seen the ones who are awesome at performing tasks!
I doooooooo agree........DOODLE'S ROCK!! One thing I get from people all the time is that Bogart just LOOKS smart. PEople always mention his eyes and face as looking bright, smart, intelligent and soulful. In fact, the other day while I was walking him, this couple were walking to a local restaraunt. They stopped me and the guy said........"Let me see........He's about 6 years old!!??" Um.............how about 22 months? The woman said this was the first time her husband was sooooo far off and he's ususally good about these things! He explained that Bogart was so well behaved and had such a great look of intelligence and EXPERIENCE in his face and EYES.......that he figured he had to be much older! PROUD MAMA HERE!! :P

Linda, I get that too...we have a 7 month old pup that people always think is, at a minimum, 2 years old! They say it is based on his focus and his attention span....(but if they saw him at home, they would see the puppy!)
I think that smart dogs are hyper BECAUSE they are smart...I believe that when they are extremely intelligent, and we don't keep their minds occupied, they get fidgity and hyper...I think that is my problem with Amelia Jane...she is toooooo danged smart! In the case of the Border Collie, they were bred to herd and that takes a LOT of attention, thought, wisdom, decision making and activity...think about it...if they are hardwired for herding and they are just sitting around the house...they are bound to be bored, and fidgit! Hmmmm....just like bored children, eh? |

Ok, I love that article. BUT I disagree with something... I think many dogs, especially our doodles, do have guilt to a degree. Perhaps in a different way than us, but I could swear they do! Plus, I swear they are way,way smarter than some 2 year olds. Case in point,my doodles easily outsmart my BRILLIANT 2 year old grandson
