Bogart has developed some sores around his wee wee........I noticed them at the beach today. They look red, sore and itchy! He's been licking and stuff, but I thought it was just him being a dog.
Anyway, just ran up to the pharmacy and got some Bacitracin and Benadryl cream. He fought being rolled on his back.....like he didn't want us near it. When I finally started rubbing the Benedryl on the area....I swear! He smiled and said "AHHHHHHH!" He just laid there spread eagle and so relaxed!! Poor baby. I have no cle.......ticks? Poison ivy? What could it be? If it gets worse, we may need to have a vet shceck it out here before home. Any clues?? OH!! BTW....we are having FUN!!

Linda, how is Bogie???
I have no clue...but I would guess that he could have come into contact with some weeds that he has not yet encountered...something just tall enough to reach his belly...maybe a burr or a sticker...but owww! I hope that he is better today...it could be an allergy or some sort of bug living in the area...I just don't know...I would advise a vet visit...but maybe he is well by now...hope so! |

Linda,
Sorry to hear Bogart is not well. I am NOT animal trained, I am human medical trained. I am typing left handed so excuse my spelling and abrv. response. I would encourage you to go to the vet ASAP, even on vacation, because some really serious things can happen. I do not want to scare you but I would go to the vet now. The ointment may have made him feel better but it would not necessarily 'treat' the problem. Anti-itch creams can mask pain, you need to find out why the itch. Red, raised, sore and itchy is a body's warning that this is bad. Best case it is an allergy to a something siimple. If that is the case there will be no why but the doc can treat to keep him comfortable and prevent complications. How is his temp? My concerns would be- **Unseen foxtail in the penis head/skin area. **He may have the rash/itching inside the folds of skin, in the penis or in the urethra. **Excessive licking can lead to urinary track infections (UTI). Even if it was a simple reaction the licking puts bacteria on a really sensitive and vital area. UTI can hurt. **If he licks the area that is sore (if it is poison oak/ivy or a poison plant ETC) he can ingest the poison and he can get sick. **If there is a tick inside the urethra, foreskin or head of his penis he could get a rash from licking and he could be in pain., ** a spider bite... Most are not lethal but but in the groin area it is tough to be very sure because of the hidden areas ** and simple sores can get infected in that area-- open sores can get infected easily. **it could be fungal, that area is hot, wet etc. right kind of treatment will make him better fastest. I do hope he is fine and this is not necessary but I believe better safe than sorry. It is a sensitive area and hard to treat at home. Just in case I would go to the vet. Do let us know how it goes. Sorry to be scary but our sweet dogs can't talk |

Thanks everyone and especially Dr. Propp with what and how things could go with this.
I called a vet on vacation and he was off that day and would charge an ER visit. But, he talked to me for quite some time. He told me that what this sounds like were a certain type of fly. He also said to look for parallel lines in the bump, as this particular fly, when it bites, does leave these lines. Bogart does have those lines. He told me of another vet I could see about 20 miles away. But, he said it doesn't sound urgent unless they become infected. He also told me to apply hydrocortisone cream mixed with a triple antibiotic. Then we have to sit there and keep him from licking for upto 15 minutes! Boy! That's FUN! SO, we got home last night and things look a tad better. If not, by tomorrow or even later tonight if things don't really look better.....we will go.
