I've been reading your forum on and off for months and finally decided to legitimize myself. I have 3 dogs, my youngest is my labradoodle Seamus. I'm so incredibly in love with my doodle that I think my husband gets jealous at times.
I rescued Seamus 1 1/2 yrs ago, drove to PA to a humane society that had several doodles from an unethical breeder. He was about 9mo old at the time. He'd never been groomed, nor walked on a leash, or house broken. He must have been kept in a pen because for a few weeks he only pooped on things that looked like bars...the hose in the yard, a stick, or an electric cord from the lamp in the living room. My third son had finally moved away to college, and I was determined I would find a fourth son....one who wouldn't talk back, or leave me for a girlfriend. I'm passionate about doing pet therapy with my Seamus at local nursing homes and assisted livings. Most people have never seen a Labradoodle. He proudly struts his stuff, and happily nuzzles up to the old ladies in wheelchairs....I think because their wheels may smell like lunch

Hi Liz - welcome to being an 'official' forum member. You'll already know how addictive it is, now you'll be spending even more time on here doing posts! I'm interested that you do therapy work with Seamus, as that's what I intend to do with Charlie...we're still at the basic training stage at the moment as he's only 5 mths, but it would be lovely to hear more about Seamus and his 'career'

Welcome out of the closet!
I admire you for what you have accomplished with your Seamus. To give a good life to any dog with such a bleak beginning must be so rewarding. Thank you for telling your story. I will look forward to many more pictures of Seamus. Hopefully you will be better at it than I am.

Thanks for all your support and welcome. I'll post more pictures as soon as I figure out this bucket-thing.
My vet actually advised me on my pet therapy work, he volunteers as a leader for the local 4H and they rescued a golden from NYC pound, and raised money for him to be fostered and trained as a service dog. He now is a service dog "on the job'. If I wanted to take seamus to a hospital I would need to get credentialled by a group such as Delta. But for senior centers and nursing homes, good behavior, and a calm temperament is fine. We're planning to test him for Canine Good Citizen in the near future. I work at a nursing home as a nurse practitioner. After Seamus completed his obedience course, the recreation therapy dept invited me to bring him in one day/week to get some experience with the patients. He became accustomed to the noises and hustle, shadowing me all day as I examined and treated the patients and then dozing by my feet when I charted. He took to the work like he was bred for it. There was a paranoid schizophrenic woman who refused to allow a physical exam, but when she met seamus she was enamored, reminiscing over her childhood with past dogs. She then told me she wouldn't allow any "doctor" to examine her, but if I still wanted to give her a physical, she'd allow "Seamus' Mom" to do it. I then knew we had something special here.
