Hi,
I'm Mary. I have been lucky enough to stumble upon a Labradoodle at our local Humane Society. I was looking for a new companion after losing my 15 yr old Golden Retriever, Sunny in August. I read a description of this dog and before they had even posted her picture on Petfinder I was filling out the adoption papers. It took one brief visit with her and she made up my mind. I'd like to think I made up my mind but I'm sure it was her doing. That was early in October so I have had her almost two months. She is a two yr old jet black Labradoodle. At Humane Society they named her Licorice but I have renamed her Olivia. They had no information on her as she was picked up as a stray. She is a lovely dog, complete with manners and training. She loves to play, balls and squeaky toys are her favourites. She is patient for baths and grooming. She does pester that cats some but that is getting better with reminders. She is marvelous!! ![]()

Welcome! She looks a bit like Tia only longer hair. Those eyes and smile! I had a bad experience with the humane society in CA and UT so I am glad you had a good experience. The humane society in some states have very good programs but so far not here or in the part of CA I am from. Here in UT there is only one place that even has a vet!
Anyway I am happy for you and glad you posted! |

Welcome, Mary! Your doodle is very cute, and I love the name Olivia. Looking forward to hearing all about her adventures. You wonder how such a great dog ended up in a shelter. So glad she adopted you!

Hi Mary - welcome from NZ. Olivia looks gorgeous, and I'm sure she's a very lucky girl to have an owner who loves her so much. Sorry about your Sunny...their shorter lifespan is the worst thing about owning dogs. I have a Sunny too...he's a 9yr old Cavalier, and is the grumpiest old man ever who just wants to snooze all day...Charlie just can't understand why he won't play with him!

Wow! Thank you for the warm welcome.
Of course dog people always seem to be the friendliest! I really don't know too much about Doodles specifically but have had many (many) years of life with dogs. I am really enjoying reading this forum and seeing so much that is just like Olivia in the posts and pictures. I am learning alot from this and it would seem necessary to keep up with these dogs as I believe Doodles are extremely intellegent. Olivia really seems to need to be challenged both physically and intellectually. She loves a game of hide and seek with her favourite stuffies and she knows and differentiates two or three of them by name now. I do have a couple of questions.... For such a pretty flouncy little lady who literally prances when she walks, I have noticed that she changes into a real tomboy when playing. She is very rough and will pin whoever she is playing with by the neck in seconds flat; a real champion wrestler. Is this common play behaviour for a Doodle??? Also, Olivia has long wavy hair and no tight curls. She is just a beautiful shaggy dog! I am wondering about haircuts? Does she need them? Her coat is very easy to work with and brush, especially if I use a little conditioner after shampoo. I keep her feet trimmed up but didn't know if there was any standard cut for these dogs. Thanks for all the help! |

It sounds like you have found out the wonderful traits of these creatures. Yes they can be sweet and calm and then when they find a playmate (usually one with a similar disposition) they love to play hard and wrestle. My Tanner's favorite buds at his daycare are a rottweiler (spelling?) and a great Dane. Of course other doodles are his first choice. His play style is to play hard, chase, wrestle then they seem to go to their own "corners" and rest a bit...then it starts all over.
The best way for us to play with him is to play fetch. He loves to retrieve and his favorite is for us to throw the ball with a Chuckit. Regarding Olivia's coat...doodles have many different types of coats. Some more straight and don't need much except an occasional bath and regular brushing. Some like my Tanner have a curlier coat and they mat quite easily. He needs to be brushed several times a week and we have him groomed every 6 weeks or so. I think if you just brush Olivia regularly you will see if she starts to mat, especially when they get wet, and you can go from there. If she doesn't shed and she doesn't mat then you have the best of both

About the play. Tia is so rough on Buddy our lab boarder collie mix. He has learned to deal with it for the most part. I do however separate them if Tia hurts him. I don't let them play without me in the front yard because that is where Buddy gets hurt the most. The yard is fenced and bigger in the front yard and they love to go out there.
Again Welcome!!! |
