Default Meet Dudley in Wisconsin

http://picasaweb.google.com/RyanMulder/Dudley

and me of course...

Just picked this guy up from the Humane Society on Saturday. He's adjusting well, is very lovable, but does have some minor 'cling' issues. He needs some good grooming and a little extra food in his bowl for a couple weeks. He is very tall but only weighs 70lbs.

The Humane Society's best estimate is that he is 1.5 years old. He has a couple bad habits, and I might be looking for some advice on how to break him of the more difficult ones... He was jumping up on doors to look out the window. He already learned that is not a good way to keep in my good graces however. He also mouths once in awhile. It's not biting, but puts his mouth over my arm. He doesn't do it to me anymore, but I'm afraid he may backslide around a child. If that were to happen and the child screams, he could get excited and nip...

So we have some work ahead of us, but we've read a fair number of obedience books while we were looking for a dog, so we have some good and safe methods of fixing most of these bad behaviors.

I'd like to thank everyone on here for all the great info! It's my first time posting, but I've been lurking for a couple weeks doing research.

Welcome...Dudly is a great looking guy!
He was lucky that you found him.
I'm certain that you understand that you can expect issues with a rescue but the things you mention appear to be his excitement at being in a home where he is loved...even the bite you talk about...we have dogs that do the open mouth touching and I know that many people will say that any teeth on skin is wrong. I disagree. My dogs that do this are showing the greatest affection for us. They are so gentle and loving with the gesture, never rough or hurtful. My husband explains it best...these dogs have no hands...yet they watch us as we reach out and touch them and each other and they want to communicate with us in that same way. Dogs are very oral and so they must use their mouths...
True, if it leads to nipping it is bad...and only you know what the act feels like, but I would tell you that unless you feel threatened, don't worry too much. (I promise that others will jump on this and tell me I am so wrong...but even one of our Guide Dog of America dogs did this with her owner and she adored her owner...)
Best wishes to you both!

Hey, Ryan, I was looking for an article on shelter dogs and ran across this...I think it is excellent because Doodles are very intelligent dogs and these suggestions sound very good:

Our doodles still have this same bad habit - they're almost 2. We do correct them, but they are just overcome by their excitement to see outside sometimes.

Welcome!!!
My mommy rescued me from a local shelter too!
I like your name, we live near a town called Dudley...
Do you like your new home?
Mine is MUCH better than living in that shelter, more food, love, toys, and playtime. And a family to call my own!

Default PROGRESSSS

It's not instant, but Dudley has been really making some progress since we picked him up May 31st.

We took him out to mom & dad's place because my sister was out there with her dogs. What a difference a week makes! Last time there was lots of teeth baring and posturing, this time he literally ran himself ragged playing with those dogs. I had to chain him up for fear of hurting himself. We got him home and he was absolutely SPENT. Just laid around all night. He barely had the energy left to go out before bed. This AM he was raring to go again of course, so that's good.

We picked up a Kong Frisbee for him as well. He went absolutely NUTS over it. In the house he kind of knows what to do with it so I think if I got him outside with less distractions (dogs) he might do better with the fetch process than he did while running with the pack. I hope to get out there tonight or tomorrow depending on their schedule. I may just have a trial run in our backyard first.

-However-
He decided to have selective hearing and not come when I called him when he was playing with the other dogs. So we're going back to basics on that one for awhile. I'm fine with playing, but when I call he should knock it off and come running. That one needs to be 100% instinct for his safety and the safety of others.
