Hello all,
We picked up Henley about a week ago, and I just found this forum. Look forward to all the support, because I am SURE I will need some! ![]() I am embarrassed to admit how we got him, but will anyway. My daughter and I went to pick up some charcoal at the local market, and the pet store is next to it. We would always look at the puppies, and Henley really wanted to come home with us. So, I know this was the entirely wrong way to get a dog, but he was 11 weeks old, and well, I dunno, he is at his home now. He came from some puppy mill out in Mo, I have the name (not handy at the moment, they are also a farm) that I will try to research later. They gave us a family tree with him, but it so far means absolutely nothing. He has been chipped, got a bunch of shots, (more next week) poo examined, yada yada. Funny, he came with a "free" vet exam after I got him that only cost me $75! I knew it would not be free, and only scratching the surface of the beginning! That behind me, he seems like an awesome dog. Very mild mannered so far, though he gets excited sometimes and has so far bit three out of four of us, and is running up our shorts bill! He sure looks more labor than doodle, with a wiry hair coat. At this point, he is almost potty trained, or maybe we are. I think he is trying anyway. This is our first puppy/dog, and we are trying hard to make it work for every one. Putting in a fence next week it will be a 30X40 foot pen, connected to the back slider of our modest raised ranch. For now I have a trolley run, which does not work out so well as he can not stand to be alone. He seemed to be okay with it (being alone) when he was studying the husky next door! He so far is a very mild mannered dog, except when he starts to get excited with a little gentle play, tennis ball, whatever. For the most part he will mouth, but once he grabbed my finger, and absolutely was not letting go, in deep, a bloody mess. I yell loudly and now know to grab under his tongue and mouth and gently pinch if he does it again? So correct? Anyway, I am probably the guy you love to commiserate about, I do wish I knew more about his bloodline, hip displashia, parents size etc. I knew all that and rolled the dice anyway. Hopefully will come out lucky. Judging by the size of his paws, I think he will be a bruiser. (Is that an accurate way to predict weight?) A family in our neighborhood has a lab that is almost 130 lbs! Question: Is the coat he has 12 weeks going to be exceedingly similar to what he will have as an adult? So far, not a lot of curls, but he is cute enough as is! So Hello! |

Welcome to the site..This is a great place to find information on just about any topic you
might have..And though Henley is your first dog, don t hesitate to chime in on the many threads.. Looks and sounds like your family heart is in all the right places..It s a tremendous responsibility raising a doodle *i hate saying DOG*, more like *best friend* or *companion* What concerned me was his biting..To me *stop* means to discontinue what your doing till given the command to continue..*NO*..discontinue what your doing and don t do it again My Toby did alot of mouthing when a pup..Something he learned between his siblings befor he came to to us..When the mouthing starts, id just hold his mouth and say *NO*..These guys are smart and learn very quickly what is expected of them..*begin Obediance Tng as soon as you can* To build up a strong bond and he ll take it as a act of affection..Start brushing and combing him daily.. I started grooming Toby the day he came..And to this day whenever i hold up the comb or brush he comes over ready to be loved..and in return after grooming him he gives me kiss s.. OK, enough of my ramblings..Eventually he ll become your family s best friend..But, remember.. how you treat him will determine if your his best friend.. |

Hello! I moved you to Introductions as requested!
WELCOME TO THE FORUM!! You sure have a cute little guy there. And according to your name, Henley better look out for his ALPHA! That little pup was just waiting for you at that pet store! It's not out usual way of acquiring doodles....but hey! He looks like a sweet guy and sounds like he has tons of personality!! I'm not so sure I could have passed up that adorable guy either!! Good having you here and looking forward to more pictures and stories! I don't think we ever know what the coat will be like in maturity. Bogart is 2 and his coat is still changing. You'll have to wait and see.....but my guess is that will no get curlier.....and most likely will remain his adorable self!

Hello, I sent a welcome on a different post so I'd like to chime in here to say that, while we don't advocate pet stores for pups, we won't hold that against you or your sweet boy Henley. We are very happy that you are here.
The biting is an issue that you will need to get some guideance on, probably an obedience class or consult with a behaviorist...it doesn't sound like typical puppy nipping... HIs coat will likely remain wiry and coarse. It may shed quite a bit as he matures...but, on the bright side, it will be very easy to groom! I would start obedience training, puppy kindergarten, right away. He will need a lot of socialization and you don't want to put that off...it needs to happen when he is young. I hope that you will find help and support here on the forum and that you will come back often! |

Welcome! You sure have a cute puppy there! I am new to the forum as well, as I just got a chocolate f1 labradoodle (she is 10.5 weeks). I also didn't obtain her in the best way. I got her from a 1st time breeder, that bred her beloved family AKC choc lab with her cousin's AKC cream poodle. No harm or foul, but now that I am more knowledgeable about the breeding standards, I realize I should have probably gotten her from a reputable breeder, as we got her at 6 1/2 weeks, which is WAY TOO young. But, nothing I can do about it now! Lucky for us, she is absolutely amazing and my cousin adopted her sister, so we have been able to continuously keep them near each other and let them socialize!
As for the being alone, Anyways, congrats! Doodles are so awesome and everyday brings more joy and excitement!!! |
