Hi everyone. My husband, 2 girls and myself recently welcomed a new addition to our family, Daisy. First I have to let it be known that we are complete newbies to the dog world so this site has been a life saver! We have had Daisy for about 3 months now (she is 1 year old) and luckily for us, she's been very patient because we've made many mistakes. She was originally from a family of 4 children and had some training but the family had to give her up and we agreed to a 'trial' visit and ended up falling for her. Some of the issues we have dealt with are not being able to take her for a walk, out of control barking and running out the front door chasing cars or other dogs. I recently had a private session with a trainer and we are making amazing progress with our walks except....and finally my question, how do you all control your doodles when another dog is in site? this is where I am at a complete loss and seem to lose control of her. She goes ballistic! I worry about another dog showing up during the whole walk....Thanks for any tips

Welcome Daisy and family! You sure are a sweet looking girl! I think, no..I know you're on the right track having a private trainer for Daisy...sounds like she has a few issues to be worked out, but with a lot of love, patience and proper training, she'll turn into the most awesome member of your famiy, and you'll be wondering whatever did you do without her!!

Hi! Welcome Daisy and Family!!! Happy to have you here!
It is nice to know that people read the posts and learn from them...thanks for telling us that you have. But better still is the fact that you are posting! Cool! I know that this sounds trite, but Daisy will probably calm down a lot in about another 6 - 12 months... hahaha...that is good news but hard to wait. I promise you that those of us who thought it would take forever are shaking our heads at how quickly that time passed! You are on the right track getting a trainer...and if you get a chance, look into clicker training...it is amazing! One thing you might try when you are walking is to have a REALLY yummy (and smelly) treat...to distract her when she sees another dog...don't force her to greet other dogs. When you see one that is going to set her off, try to turn quickly and walk the other way...giving her a treat and talking in a high voice. Barking and walking on leash are two of the toughest problems and since it is usually so individual, I really do think that your trainer will be able to help...but do keep us up to date on what you are trying and how it works because we may have some ideas along the way. Here are some quick ideas that might help...not exactly on point, but maybe they will lead you.... http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Conten ... C=0&A=1574 |

helllllloooooooooooooo welcome to the forum and CONGRATS on Daisy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
working w/a private trainer......wow that's great!!! as you've stated you're making progresss. NOW if you HAD said you're doodle Daisy wasn't getting excited when seeing other dogs then i'd have been worried Some of it comes with time /maturity.......they do calm down (eventually) Max who used to be turbocharged had to arrive 30 min EARLY to OB class so he'd calm down by time class was ready to start! I mean during our REFRESHER class when he was approx 14mos old He's almost 3.5 yrs OLD NOW and will IGNORE other dogs barking at him in parkig lots, walking on street etc soooooooo IF MAX can do it..........DAISY can too (just not now) I CAN"T wait to see pics of DAISY and your kids!!!!! you'll love this forum and also doing seaches will bring up soooooooooooo many past posts with much help/advice or ideas but PLEASE ALSO ask questions!!! YOU"LL LOVE This forum: great help, we will make you LAUGH when there's days you want to whine hahahaa, great support and much much more!! AGAIN WELCOME and glad to see you joined!

Thanks to all who have replied - you've been very reassuring and also so kind. I have to tell you that tonight my husband and I took Daisy for a walk to the park. The first thing I noticed was a dog to the left and then another to the right way down the field (with their owners), and I said, Oh no.....now we have to keep her on the leash. But then after a little thought and a ton of yanking from Daisy I decided to just let her go and see what would happen since the other dogs looked to be well trained. Well she was fantastic!! of course she ran to them and did her crazy dance but 3 more dogs showed up and she just ran around, barked a bit and had a great time. I think this is what I need to do more of to get her used to them and to get me more relaxed. I did bring some smelly saucage bits and she came back to me when it was time. I'm just really relieved tonight and again thank you all for the great advice. I'm going to try and post some pics.
