Hello Everyone,
Firstly, Not sure how to load an image???????? so you can see who I am talking about. When I hit Img button it just pastes words... I am so excited to share my new companion who came to me just a few days ago. Her name is Lilly. She is a rehomed doodle that is 9 months old. It feels like kismet, truly, that we came together. She has settled in like a dream! I am in awe of her and how sweet, and intelligent she is. Yes, I know, she isn't perfect but wow! I couldn't have asked for a better fit for my family and other animals (OT: that is the title of a book I highly recommend by Gerald Durrell ,My Family and Other Animals). She has had basic obedience and I have already gotten her to learn new things (amazing what a broken off piece of peice of p-nuttier treats will do for good manners!!) She seems very poodle so not sure what lab she exhibits, looks or manners, except the very friendly demeanor to man and beast alike. I am so smitten!! I promised I would share a story about my golden retriever whom I had for 13+ years who I feel there is a small spirit in Lillydoodle: Thanks for the tips on the cats. I was just wondering if it will ber her nature (labradoodle) to chase/bark at them even if she only wants to play/investigate? The cats will scatter quickly. One cat likes dogs and if Lily doesn't go after her all the time she will love her. The other cat is 19 and may not warm up. **UPDATE: the cats are fine..Lilly wants to play with them but the older cat puts her in her place and the younger one will come around and I think they will be pals and she can rub up against those fuzzy legs!! Andy, my golden retriever never chased them that I recall and the cats liked to rub against him. He was 2 or so when he came to me (he was named Andrew after hurricane Andrew because he showed up in my back yard just after the storm went thru, we had heard that there were displaced animals from that, and just assumed that was his story after we could never locate an owner locally. we live hours away from Miami but that was our story/name we gave him and he just acted like he lived here since he was born and instantly came home.) It has been two years since I had to have Andy put to sleep. Jeez, that was hard. Mostly because he seemed fine except his body just wouldn't function like his mind told him to. Lost control of his bodily functions and got where his back end gave out. He was 15. He didn't care if he had pee or poop on him (yes, I did the diaper thing) as long as I was in sight of him. What a sweet boy! We had eyes for each other, if you couldn't tell. I have lots of questions but need to save them for later as that I have work to do and have been using Lillydoodle as an excuse to not get it done. It is like I brought home an adopted child : ) Before I registered and logged in I read many posts and look forward to being part with my new friend, lilly. Bye for now, Christine and Lilly in Florida (central east coast) |

Welcome Christine and Lily! We are happy to have you here!
Hmmm, when I post a picture, I click on "upload attachment" tab (below the post) and then I click on "browse" and select a picture, then "add the file" and it should appear. There are instructions for adding your profile picture at the top of the forum menus...so I won't go into that detail. Lily is as lucky that you found her as you are. Congratulations...I can tell you really love her. About cats...some Doodles have strong hunting instincts and, unfortunately, small animals and birds have parished...including kittens...but some Doodles just love them, like a member of the pack. You will just have to watch and see...but be very cautious and don't leave them alone until you have had Lily long enough to know how she will be...especially when you are not in the room... |

Thank you for the warm welcome to Lilly and I. We are doing wonderfully...she is perfect! ok, I know not perfect but she is pretty darn close ; )
I had written a lengthy post earlier today with updates and comments and the few issues we need to work on. I spent a good amount of time writing it and aaarrghhh, it was lost in cyberspace when I tried to upload an attachment as was kindly pointed out to me but the file was too large so it deleted my post! insert curse words here...note to self always copy your text before trying to upload a file... Anyways, I love me some doodle! she is fabulous if I didn't already make that clear : ) but there are a few issues that need addressing pronto: >Kitty bons bons and how dogs just love them. Cat poop in the yard if you didn't get the euphemism...My cats and my neighbors 8 or so go in the yard and I do not know where they are to retrieve them before the bloodhound in her gets to them even if she is on her leash. Not something that I want to live with. Any training tips to stop this? > Cat food in the bowls in the kitchen. She loves it and actually any other animal food that she can scarf down before I get it up out of reach. Also not something that is allowable. >Some bolting out the door. This one I think I need to just intensely work on the wait command but even if she 'waits' she still does the doodle 500 once she realizes she if off leash. Problem only in that she has gone out of bounds for comfort from her large yard and has today ran down to a road with speeders ( actually a scenic route but residents in a hurry go way too fast) to greet a woman and her dog. I plan to fence the front but I imagine she could leap a four foot fence if she really wanted to so I need her to listen to the come command or not even do the bolting thing until she is given permission. Any training tips? She has graduated from basic education training at Petsmart with her previous owner so she knows a fair amount and mostly follows it but a lady with a dog is just too tempting for her manners to override the impulse : ) Thanks in advance for thoughts/tips. and I am not sure if I will try the upload thing until I make sure my photo file is smaller (which takes some editing) so I am disappointed you can't see her yet. Her coat is growing out a bit from a super short summer cut. I prefer it with a little more scruff to it than it was when I first met her but will definitely keep it short in the summer and probably won't have it super fluffy in our mild winters but we will see. How many of you take to groomers? Is is conceivable I could keep her cut? I do not have training but I have cut my other dogs hair and human hair so not completely foreign idea...I am kind of a DYI'er but if it out of ability and I risk making her look like a beauty school reject I will take her to a pro...she has had groomers work on her because she lets me totally give her foot rubs and clean her eyes/ears and all that.. Ok, sorry for the wordy post...like I said I love me some doodle and especially my Lillydoodle. Gosh, now I want to meet other Labradoodles. Do you guys have in person meet and greets?? HI...so sorry about losing your post! That has happened to me a time or two and it is very frustrating!
Aw, your questions are common ones and I would say that the first thing to teach Lily is the "leave it" command...that is the most valuable thing to have a dog learn...my pups (although started young) know that when I say "uh uh!" they are to back away...and they do! Same principle as leave it. I am not great with normal commands. My dogs learn by osmosis...but thank goodness they learn. I have had a dog bolt whenever she sees that she can...and she runs for hours...scares the dickens out of me! She always comes home when she is ready. Last time she came back and had something like 14 ticks on her and I didn't see them until the ticks got engorged...so she was pretty miserable and she has not bolted since. The cat bon bons (yes, I got it first read! LOL) are a temptation to dogs...I don't know why...but I don't have cats (husband is allergic) so I don't have any advice about that...sorry. If you do a search on the forum you will find a lot of information on Doodles and cats...I was looking for an article about dogs eating cat poop (common, they say) and I found this to be interesting: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Conten ... C=0&A=2130 You have a few things to work on...I suggest that you target the most important issue first and start slowly. Don't try to teach everything at once. Since "leave it" could work for cat poop and cats...that is a good start, I think. As for bolting, just be sure that you are securely shutting doors and keeping Lily on leash when there is a chance of going. You could invest in one of those porch enclosures that people use for security... Now, about the pictures...if it is too tough to download as I mentioned earlier...try this: how-post-pictures-t10433.html I am sure that others will have some good ideas for you... |
