Default I can haz a treat (and Daisy can't)

Mom got this thing called a pedi-paws. Yesterday she sat us down and let us sniff it and gave us treats. It was okay, I guess. So today, she gets out the treats and turns the thing on. Srsly, dudes, it sounds awful, like a bee (you know we hate bees). And she tried to make Daisy sit still while she tried to put it on her claws. Daisy said "no way!" and wiggled til she got away. Then it was my turn and she got me on the couch on her lap. She touched it to my claw and it felt kinda funny. I drew back a little. But Daddy kept tellin me I was a big boy. So I gave my paw back to her and let her make the thing eat my claws. It wasn't so bad after I figured it out. I let her do all my nails and I got seven liver crackers! And Daisy got none!

Dudes, if your mom gets one of those things, cooperate, it's worth it. But tell mom to buy the carob treats next time, they're better than liver.

Your pal,

Dex

They do work pretty well. I don't know if you were around when Kevin cut Dex's quick pretty bad. It bled for 24 hours and I had to make him an elizabethan collar out of a lard bucket (the pic is hysterical, after the fact). But I am very very bad about keeping up with his nails since then. His nails are very thick and the quick goes very far into the length of the nail. And they're black, which makes it harder still. I had asked for a Dremel for Christmas but didn't get one (we had Christmas Friday, while Kevin's home). So I bought a pedi paws. I think I might like the dremal better, because the guard thing is a pain. But you can unscrew it and use it without. You want to make sure to get the fur pulled back, or it will tangle in it and pull it.

For the most part, I'd say Daisy isn't having any part of it, but she goes to the groomer often enough that she doesn't really need it. Dex is a treat monger and will do anything for them, so it's working with him. It's taking the pressure off me and making me feel comfortable with the whole experience.

Well done Dexter. We are all proud of you. And your daddy is right, you are a big boy so bravery is expected of you.

Tyke is getting one for Christmas...I'm sure she will like her treats and stuffed animals better, but it will be a lifesaver for me! My Eskies' claws were so easy to trim, because they were white, and I could see the quick easily. Fritzy would actually sit up on the couch and hand me her front paws, like a lady getting a manicure! Tyke's are actually a reddish brown, and I can't see a thing! She goes to the groomer fairly often, but for those times when she misses for a few weeks, hopefully I can keep them short myself.

Good for you Dex!!! Me and Mol don't mind the Pedi-Paw's thingie either...Dad takes the guard off too..it's easier...he tried the dremel, but the noise scared us...the Pedi-Paw is a lot quieter, even tho it takes longer...we love it...(well actually, Mom is holding us down.. ) much less scarier than those clipper thingies..besides..our nails are black, and Dad doesn't know where the 'quick' ends!!!

Your pal,
Raleigh!

Ok - I'm seeing much more positive feedback about PP here than on my question post...maybe I'll give it a try. Rita - how loud is it? LIke as loud as electric clippers?

No, nowhere near as loud as a clippers. It's a buzzy noise, and it vibrates, so it is much like a bee. But a couple sessions of treating and letting them know it doesn't sting like a bee and all is well. At least with Dex. Daisy is another story all her own

Kind of like an electric razor Leslie....make sure you buy the larger model..not the small one!

Good job Dex!!! You sure are brave. Can you get the quick with the PP? That is the only thing stopping me from using it

It says you'll get a really thin layer before the quick, so if it starts going to easily, stop. But if you do get the quick, it's supposed to cauterize it instantly. It sure stinks when you're zipping along, so I would think it would.

I found it works better when I follow my groomer's advice. She said instead of holding it in place, you do 'touch-touch-touch' and that works well. It seems to take away more material that way and the dogs like it better.

We have the Peticure Elite (not Pedipaws) and use a "rolling touch touch" (does that make sense?).

Doodles actually have pretty "hard" nails, so you need more than the minimum model. If you have a problem with the "buzzing" noise (it's not that bad -- not as loud as clippers), take the time to desensitize -- lay it on the floor turned on and play and treat.

I spent the first week desensitizing -- rolling it on her body with treats in my hand, etc.

She doesn't LOVE it (don't think dogs LOVE it with clippers either), but she knows she gets a treat after each paw and FUN FUN tug of war when we're done. She comes to me when she sees it because she remembers the TREATS and playtime afterwards.

It's the same as teaching a dog to tolerate being BRUSHED -- go slow in the beginning, and you'll be amazed.

I did it for my own sanity, not the doodle's. It's too hard for me to see the quick.
