Yesterday just seemed like a long day so I decided to turn in early last night. Marley and I took one last walk for the day, to take care of business and went to bed about 9:30. Marley followed me upstairs, as he usually does. The ritual treat after he gets into the bedroom followed by his joining us in bed to get some loving. Usually he basks in the petting for several minutes, then curls up at the bottom of the bed for a half hour or so, then heads to his bed on the floor in the room.
Tonight the routine was broken. Tuesday is a day care day so he usually is very mellow on these nights. Often his activity during the night is moving from one spot to another to continue his marathon nap. After jumping on the bed and getting his petting, he put his head on my stomach and just passed out. He laid there for about hour, until I had to move my position or risk paralysis. I was as warm and comfortable as he appeared to be. And if that feeling and smile on my face could be transferred to power, I could have lit the holiday lights on the house. An occasional pet resulted in a moan of thanks, which he often does. To me there is not a comparable feeling in the world. As a puppy, these moments happened often. Then he grew up and with the few short months passing, his independence grew and these moments disappeared. It’s nice to know he still finds comfort and trust in lying with/on me as he dozes off. Now, as he approaches 20 months of age, his personality continually but subtlety changes. Not sure what the final product will be, but I am hoping moments like last night will be in his routine. __________________________________________________ __________________________________ Greg "I used to look at my dog and think, 'If you were a little smarter you could tell me what you were thinking,' and he'd look at me like he was saying, 'If you were a little smarter, I wouldn't have to.'" - Fred Jungclaus

It's really what makes them so special! I just love the look and the grunts of elation caused by a nice ear rub. Jonah and Miko especially melt during this activity.

That is such a cute story!! And don't assume it is definitely an isolated incident...Dexter has become extremely more loving and cuddly as he has gotten older. He will routinely come over and lay on us the past few months - something he rarely did in the past.

Awwwwwww! I feel so grateful that Sammy is a huge cuddler and is always happy to get some petting, snuggling and hugs (except when she has gotten into some burrs, and then she thinks I am going to torture her by combing them out and hides in her crate, ha!)

Maya is my cuddler. She will start on the bed at night and then go down to the floor. In the morning when she gets up she will lay her head on the bed waiting for me to awake and tell her to come up. She will jump right up and she makes sure to get as close to me as possible when she lays down. If she isn't close enough she will keep scooting closer until she feels she is close enough. Then she goes back to sleep!!!
I'm glad Marley likes is cuddles too and knows just when you need extra cuddles to get you through the day/night!!! |

Greg, such a nice description of what "doodle love" is all about. We have noticed that as Tanner gets older he gets more loving.....Tim and I just marvel at it. Especially with all the trouble in our world these day, having these wonderful, sweet companions helps us to realize what is really important. They are such special dogs.

Awwww . . . those moments will last and may grow! Dakota has never been a cuddler. now, at three, he appreciates the attention of pets and scratches. This morning was no exception. My husband is almost always laying on the couch when I finally get up, at 6am

Awww... what a sweet moment!
Charlie is not much of a snuggler so I appreciate it when he comes and presses up against me. Normally, he likes to be close but have his own space. Wayne, OTOH, is always in someone's lap. He can't get enough and you have to push him off your chest. Deb

Greg, what a great description.
Sadie still sleeps in her crate but in the morning when she is ready to get out, she doesn't want to go outside, she jumps in the bed and snuggles real close and will usually fall asleep again for about an hour. I just pet her softly and we both will fall off to sleep again for some time. Especially nice on these cold winter mornings.

GREG that is such a heartwarming story and my "awwwwwww" of the day, thank you.
when we go to bed it takes some convincing for Max/Peanut to come up after i lay our their special blanket on top of our covers Peanut loves to lie on my legs nudging her head close to Dave and my hands waiting to be petted adn kissing us at same time. Max curls up behind my back and turns his head upside down waiting for a neck rub/scratch then kisses us while we acommodate him then about 10min later they move down the bed a tad giving ME leg room and they curl up into tight balls. If i read too late Max nudges my book with his nose

'Then he grew up and with the few short months passing, his independence grew and these moments disappeared."
Reminds me of my youngest daughter...now she's 17 she's very much the independent teenager who thinks a hug with mum is bad for her image....but when she's not feeling well or very tired she'll crawl onto the bed with me for a cuddle and I think 'she's still my baby' Charlie doesn't seek cuddles but he always lies on my feet and if I haul him onto my knee (beginning to need a crane for that!) he just flops and lays his head against me and looks into my eyes....so sweet and trusting. Must go and give him a hug now... Ann
