Default Raleigh Treed a Bear!!!!!!

OMG....my heart is STILL pounding......Bruce left for Connecticut a half hour ago (school starts tomorrow for the teachers anyway)...and I sat down here at the computer to browse the forum...out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement in the Hosta garden, and thought..oh great..George is here again..he's the weimariner that lives up the street that roams freely....peeing on our vegetable gardens and flowers...he's a beautiful dog, and the street we're on people drive 40-45mph..someday he's going to get hit...so we've been calling the dog warden, every time he comes here, and his owners get fined..but they do NOTHING about it!!! ...Anyway, my brain told me that the movement was a little too dark to be George...I grabbed my camera, and without too much excitement, tried to nonchalantly shut the front door...of course, Raleigh jumped off the couch and started following me..by that time, I knew it was a bear, after peeking out the side window....when I tried unsucessfully to shut the back door , Raleigh spotted the bear, and took a flying leap off the stairs in the mud room, hit the storm door that was slightly ajar, and chased him (or her ) up a tree by the garage...the bear was sooo scared, he left a trail of pee all across the driveway...did I get a picture of the bear in the tree??? Of course not....he started to slide down, and Raleigh was at the base barking his fool head off...I turned around and tried to run as best I could back to the steps (yes...stupidly I had ventured beyond the safety of the porch, trying to get Raleigh back in the house... ) The bear ran off to the neighbors yard, and the only photo I have is the following..the bear is looking back at Raleigh and is to the left of the birch tree....
Gotta love New Hampsha, and Raleigh of course!!!!! Bwahahahahaha
P.S. My heart is back to normal now.....

The furthest dark tree to the left of the garage is the one the bear ran up..

We have a lot of black bears around here..moose too, but I haven't seen any..only their cloven hoove prints in the ground.....people are told to take in their bird feeders in the spring when the bears come out of hibernation and are famished....it's not exactly spring tho, and I'm sure they've depleted the blackberry and blueberry stocks that grow wild...so maybe they're hungry again???
True story but sad at the same time..2 yrs ago, our electricians wife baked a blueberry pie and put it on the screened in porch to cool..Mistake number one!!! Hahahaha...she then went and laid down for a nap, and awoke to a commotion in the kitchen...thinking that someone had come in the house, she peeked out her bedroom door, and there was a bear in her freezer rummaging for food...he wasn't happy with the pie for an appetizer ...she snuck out the bedroom window, ran to a neighbors and alerted animal control...unfortunately, the bear had to be put down, as they felt he was way too agressive.. Also unfortunately, it's us that has encroached upon their territory....enough said...

Wow, that's really scary! I was a wildlife carer for more than 20 years in Australia and the worst I had to deal with was large injured kangaroos and I did have one quite big goanna. Oh, and several goshawks (gotta watch their talons). All the other animals and birds were gentle and harmless. Being a wildlife carer where you live takes on a whole new meaning.

Here on Norfolk Island there are no land animals or reptiles at all. Only birds. Even our spiders are not dangerous, unlike those in Oz. Nice for the dogs as there is no fear of snake bite.

We had black bears down here years ago, but hunters killed them all off...now they are pretty much confined to the upstate...I still think they are beautifu, but I am sure they can be scary pests too...I would trade them for our gators any day! Glad you all are ok, and Raleigh, you sure are a brave boy!!!

OMG how scary !!! No more going outside for any of you - glad you are all ok

Sue - gators and bears rank up there with snakes - God could take them all off earth and send to Mars and I'd be one happy camper !!

Please fight the instinct to go after Raleigh next time. Dogs can run faster than a bear, but humans often get hurt because they don't realize how fast bears can move. I am SO glad you are okay and I know your heart must have been racing for hours.

Raleigh ROCKS!! Love that he was defending you and his home. Extra treats for Raleigh!!
