Default Coyote Attacks

Just a word of warning for those that live in coyote land--two dogs in the Lake Tahoe area were killed -- while their owner was walking them (off-leash) by a pack of coyotes; and these were two seperate instances. We DO have coyotes around our lake house. I plan to be much more cautious when I walk Dakoa to the lake. Idid hear the sound of coyotes taking a deer down one night--the sound of the deer was beautiful and so sad and mournfuk all at the same time . . .

Coyotes are starting to appear here in SC as well - I've seen them near the river early in the morning on my way to work - beautiful animals, but they ARE dangerous! Hope they don't decide to come to our neighborhood..we have lots of deer, and they are so tame because they don't have any natural predators here....I hate the thought of people shooting coyotes, but I have to say, if it was the coyote or Tyke, I'd be firing away!

Farmers have been shooting coyotes for many years around here. I feel bad for them, 'cause they're just doing what comes naturally to them, but I can see why the farmers can't afford to let their livestock be killed too.

It's a tough situation.

I hope Dakota stays safe. I'd be very sad if he got attacked.

We intend to stay safe and you all do too! When we walk to the lake in the mornings I intend to take at least an air gun with me. I have only seen the coyotes an singles but I hear them running--howling--in packs at night.

OK, don't know if I told this story before so I apologise if it's a rerun:

We have an elderly couple with a fat little pug dog living near us (at the lake). One night Harold let his put out to potty at around 10pm. His yard is not fenced and he did not go out with his dog. a few minutes later, he heard his dog screaming and immediantly thought coyote!!!! He went running out to save his dog and this is what he encountered: a great horned owl had it's talons in the side of the dog trying desprately to get airborn--Harolds screaming scared it off the dog!!!!! Thanks goodness the little pug was so fat!!!!!!! All was well but the pug did have the talon scars to proove it!

We have a lot of coyotes in our area and I am always
careful, Denver is big dog but it is foolish to think that
he is safe as a pack of coyotes can bring down a deer
so we are always watching....................

My neighbours have lost many cats and small dogs to them
so I am always on my guard...........

We had coyote problems around our neighborhood earlier this summer. Several cats were taken and then a small dog was taken by coyotes right before the eyes of the owner. The dog was out for it's morning pee and it seemed like the coyotes were waiting for it. Of course, there were all sorts of coyote sighting. Seems a small pack had taken up residence in the area. But two adults were trapped and now there are fewer sightings.

Abbey is only 30lbs so we were concerned enough not to let her use her doggie door after dark. But now she has free use of the door again. I know a dog doesn't have much of a chance against a pack of coyotes!

Yikes! Stay safe all of you in coyote country. Apparently their have been a few sightings here, but I haven't heard of any incidents. I think coyotes are becoming like raccoons and adapting to more suburban and urban settings.

We have one or two coyotes here in New Mexico... Just use good sense and they aren't a problem.

I have had a coyote go after Cinnamon once, thank God it was one not the pack. It scared the bejebbers out of me. I yelled and it took off, not wanting to confront a human on it's own.

This happened in our front yard. Cinnamon was running in her usual morning run ( she gets her 500's out early) when it came out of the trees by the pond/lake. Cinnamon took off for Mom when she saw it. It was right behind her when I yelled at it. I'm so glad she's is shape and can run fast!

We have a fenced in back yard she goes into when I'm not watching her. I know of several dogs around here that have scars from the coyotes - the ones that survive. I'm not willing to have Cinnamon be one of them.

Had to share this "Coyote Meets Labradoodle" story I just found online!

Quote:
Game wardens went door-to-door yesterday warning homeowners about the dangers of feeding wild animals, a day after a Carlsbad woman and her dog were attacked by a pack of coyotes outside her home near the La Costa Resort & Spa golf course.

Elaine Smith, 36, said she escaped injury because of the heroic efforts of her 95-pound chocolate Labradoodle, Dakota.

"He saved me," she said. "When he heard me scream after they bit my pant leg, he grabbed one by the neck and slung him away."

Smith said she was walking her dog on Swallow Lane, near El Camino Real, about 10 p.m. Wednesday when eight to 10 coyotes came at her from nearby bushes.

Backing away, Smith tripped on the curb as she tried to control the leashed dog, which was jumping around, agitated by the animals. The coyotes rushed her when she went down, biting at her legs and shredding her sweat pants.

"I have never been afraid of coyotes before because they usually run away," she said, "but these ones came strategically at me from three directions."

"And once I fell, I guess they thought I was lunch meat."

At one point, Dakota – rescued by Smith from the Humane Society 10 years ago – went on two legs, Smith said, fending off the coyotes until she stood up. Then they ran a block home.

Two game wardens from the state Department of Fish and Game responded at 11:40 p.m. and found four coyotes.

Regional Patrol Chief Mervin Hee said one was shot and killed when it demonstrated no fear of the officers.

"We don't relocate coyotes," Hee said. "If the animals show no fear of humans, they are euthanized. If they had run away, they would have been gone and we wouldn't have had an issue with them."

Hee said coyotes rarely bite people and are not normally aggressive unless their behavior has been altered through human contact.

Fish and Game officers believe somebody was illegally feeding the coyotes, trying to domesticate them.

Hee also suspected the coyotes were attracted to the neighborhood by a large number of rabbits that live near the golf course and by people leaving out trash or pet food.
