Default A HUGE leap of faith....

Well, I took the doodles on a long walk last night and ended up at a friends house who has one of those neighborhoods with no fences. She has an older Afghan hound and they were doing the nice butt sniff when she encouraged me to let the doodles of leash so we could visit. She said all the neighborhood dogs play together and run around all over the place. It was with great hesitation that I let them off leash. At home, as soon as they are "free", they make a run for the park across and down a busy street. MAkes me NUTS with worry and I have to drive to go get them and so I just don't trust them....

Well, let me tell you I was SO proud of them. They ran and played with about 4 complete strangers (dogs), and if I could not see them I would call their names and they both came running back!! They would check in with me and I would tell them they were good dogs and to go play and off they went! Sometimes I would notice that they would start to wonder off a bit and then, as if they wanted to make sure I was still there, they would come back and check in. They were so happy, I could tell.

I was so pleased and proud of them. Next time I will take my camera. I makes me want to take them ot and let them off leash more often, but I'm still not absolutely sure about their recall.

Good job to your doodles.

What I find...ours do much better off leash (in non fenced areas) when they join a pack of well behaved dogs for play. We let Dex off leash at a very crowded dog beach yesterday and he followed the lead of 2 other doodles and just kept swimming to fetch the ball.

That's awsome. the only time I leave Maya off leash is if she is with a dog that is really good with recall. When she is with a really well behaved dog her recall is 100%.

That sounds really fun and your doodles were so good! We live in a ground floor condo with a small back yard of our own, but our condo has a large (nearly football field size) area where all 7 of the dogs who live here play. We also take them to the barn to play with the two jack russell terriers that live there and they go for walks in the woods every day. All three of these places are "off leash" so they had to learn! Basically any time that they don't listen they get put back on their leash immediately and don't get to play any more.. so they learned quickly! Hagrid isn't 100% though.. he's 11 weeks old and there are lots of obedience classes in his future!
