Default Gimpy Dakota

Well, Dakota "yiped" and limped again so I took him to the vet today. The vet couldn't really find anything by palpitating except she thought he resisted a bit when she stretched his hip. So, she recommended hip x-rays.. She showed us the x-ray results and said that he has some indication of a bit of squaring of the ball in his left hip and although there really wasn’t an indication of a problem, that could be where the problem is. Well, ok Dr., but his problem is in the RIGHT leg!! Sheesh—that didn’t do much for our confidence! She prescribed complete rest and anti-inflammatory meds for 2 to 3 weeks or until he is completely healed. I really don't think she has a clue. But looking online, there are many muscles in the hip region that do get strained--in particular iliopsoas strains in athletic dogs, and Dakota is VERY athletic. I'm guessing it's a strain of some sort and her recommendation of rest and inflammatory still seems appropriate. She also prescribed sedatives if needed to keep him docile. So, $300 later, we'll see!!

Think of it as ruling out something more serious. Perhaps that's worth $300?! I hope Dakota is feeling better soon.

Poor Dakota!
It is so hard to keep a dog that is active, "mellow" for any length of time!
Sacramento isn't too far from UC Davis....would they have some sort of specialist for that if you needed it looked at again? I have used them years ago for things that I assumed that the vet didn't have a clue about.
Hoping things don't go that far though, and the meds & rest take care of everthing!

Dakota sends his thanks for all the well wishes. And yes, UC Davis is a fabulous vet resource. I truly believe, in this instance, that Dakota has a pulled muscle that just needs rest. Both the vet and tech asked how long he limps after he hurts himself and yelps? 1 or 2 days? Answer: 1 to 2 minutes! After a minute, he's up and ready to go again. With that info, the vet immediantly ruled out any tendon tears because that would be much more disabling. She did say that Dakota, like many doodles, carries the lab's incredible tolence for pain. Interesting as I have never associated labs with pain tolerence . . . come to think of it, my last lab was a whimp!!!
