Default We can't go out back....

There's a skunk waddling around in our back yard! It's a young one. I saw it in front of my next door neighbor's house last night. Of course they're not home yesterday or tonight. According to another neighbor a litter was born under my next door neighbor's patio. Now they are wandering further afield. It was up near our back door and of course Cali went ballistic from inside the house, thank goodness! I hope it moves on, although I don't want anyone's dog to get sprayed. Two summers ago when we were trying to trap a mama squirrel who had a litter in our attic with a have a heart trap, we ended up trapping a skunk! I was glad when the exterminator came to get it. Stay tuned. For now, all Cali's pottying will be out the front door. Cross your fingers we don't get sprayed!!!!

Oh Meg, glad you are being so very careful!!!!!!!
We have skunks in our neighborhood and have had two
dogs sprayed ............We have been lucky so far as we have had one that tries to get into our garbage but
we have animal proof lids so he has does not come around as much............Whenever Denver barks at the
garage area we know it is either a skunk or raccoon or coyote. We are always checking the yard before he goes out
and we live in a suburbian neighborhood................

our neighbor had skunks nest in a hollowed out base of a tree in their yard for 2 years in a row.

the juvenile skunks can't spray but who wants to get close enough to find out! HOWEVER truth is those skunks will get to learn your voice as
it happened with me. one year was so bad while sitting outside i'd be told
Annmarie don't move there's a skunk by your foot

they even got in my house.........took 1.5hours to get it out as they love cat and/or dog kibble. Skunks travel the same path daily and are territorial animals. so always make sure you doors are closed and lids are tight on garbage. In the past I have spent many a night sitting in my truck WAITING for Mr Skunk to move away from my front door so i can go in my house

YOU can call pest control to get rid of them which might not be a bad idea.
it's listed in phone book.

Wow - we don't have skunks around here - maybe the alligators eat them!
We live up a hill and about 1/4 mile from the Great Swamp Sanctuary, and there are also several ponds in our neighborhood. Last year a neighbor opened his back door to find himself greeted by a 6 foot gator!
(I think I'd prefer the skunk.........the don't eat dogs, do they???)

"How'd THIS happen?"

I imagine she was really confused when she went for her little ride (to find a *new* home)!

...and best of all - nobody got "skunked"!!!

Love the skunk pictures MySweetDoodle!!! And your sense of humor!!!

Meg.....many years ago, I had a cross between a shepard and collie named Maggie....she got 'skunked' one night, and I frantically rummaged thru the cabinets to find tomato juice (heard that it helps get the smell out)
Not finding tomato juice, I used two jars of Ragu tomato sauce with basil!! Hahahahaha...I was picking out little green specs in the white part of her fur (now a nice shade of sauce) for weeks!!!

Another skunk story...
My daughter had a golden retreiver that got 'skunked' also...she and I drove to a local pet store to buy whatever they had to get the smell out...
And it wasn't cheap either...anyway, the clerk helping us said to go to Walmart and buy the cheapest douches (you read that right..douches! hahaha) available....there was vinegar and water in them...so my daughter grabs a dozen, puts them on the conveyer belt, and starts giggling uncontrolably...when I asked her what was so funny, she said in a low whisper...'I hope the cashier dosen't think all of that is for ME!!!!
Bwahahahahaha.....vinegar,water???? Why didn't we just go to the grocery store?????

Great skunk pictures MySweetDoodle! And Kathie, what a funny story on both counts about the Ragu and the douches! Thanks for the laugh!

Well, no skunking last night fortunately. We watched from the windows until it was too dark to see as it made itself at home wandering around the yard and through the flower beds. Didn't see if it left the way it came. So, I put a big sign on the back door SKUNK!!!!!! to remind everyone to check before letting Cali out. The worst part is that Cali just started on prednisone to see if that will take the itchies away. She awoke me last night panting. Worried she needed to go pee in addition to being thirsty, I took her out front in my jammies to potty. No way we were going to go out back and run in to our little skunk. Guess that will be the routine for the next little while while she's on the prednisone. Thank goodness it's pitch dark and no one's out and about at 3:30 a.m.!

Here's our "squirrel" we caught when trying to lure momma and babies from our attic two summers ago.

hahahaaaa! Thanks for this thread! I have a couple here too now for years! My Springer got sprayed twice last year..
We watch fifi la pew out of our front window walking around at dusk.
At night, I take Bogart out on a 30 foot leash. We have the sensor lighting and I hold the leash short until I see fifi isn't around!
Get a 30' leash!! Hope you don't get sprayed...the little buggers!

OH! A year ago, I was standing outside just after dark. I was looking at the neighbors house on each side because they were out of town and had asked us to watch their house. I heard a noise and so I went out.....brave me.............well as I was standing there, I felt something brush my leg. I thought it was on of the feral friendly cats. NOT! It was a skunk!! I stood absolutely still with my heart pounding until he/she got about 6 feet away and then bolted into the house!! YUCK!! hahahaha

LOL. So far my doodles and my family and myself haven't come into contact with a skunk.
Great pictrues of the Skunk.
Thanks for sharing such a funny story.

Haha! Nifty squirrel...

Mom and dad get them in the yard sometimes since they're out in the country. Dad told me I'm not allowed to take my .22 until he gets on of his own!

Just need to hit them in the head on the first try otherwise you're at the mercy of the breeze.

Love your "squirrel" Calimom!

Actually, our skunk was supposed to be a groundhog! We were trying to trap and relocate the pesky groundhog because we were tired of filling in all the holes that he dug. We wound up getting our black w/ white stripe "groundhog" instead, LOL. She was pretty darn cute though.

Love all the other skunk stories too - great fun!
