Default Dakota's July Vacation

We got to the lake on July 1st and with one hour I took a rather innocent step backward onto my right heel (while recovering from the broken ankle on my right leg) and felt a terrible pain shoot up the back of my calf. As it turned out, I must have pulled, vs ruptured, my Achilles tendon. To compensate, I walked, hobbled is probably more like it, with the weight on my right heel to avoid any further strain on my tendon. Within a day, I bruised my heel from the new weight, which hurt almost as much as the tendon. Poor Dakota! Once again, I was back on very limited walking. Gene’s son—who Dakota loves—joined us. Twice, I asked him to walk Dakota and Sparky, Dakota’s best friend, to the lake. My sweetie pie Dakota would start down the dirt road with Sean and Sparky but would keep looking back for me. When he figured out I wasn’t coming, he would help back home and refuse to go to the lake!

Gene and I took Dakota for a drive to a beach on the lake so he could go for a swim.

Sean not only brought his dog Sparky, but he also brought his friend Scotty and his dog Buddy. Scotty has a bi-polar disorder and, in addition to medication, his Dr suggested her get a dog. So he went to the shelter and found a dog to adopt. I think this is the first dog Scotty ever had and he is soooooo protective about "Buddy" --to the point that I think he causes Buddy stress (smile). Buddy has never been on hardwood floors so he was really skittish and nervous when he first "slid" into our house. AND Buddy seems never to have been on stairs and Scotty choose to stay in the basement--he had to literally drag Buddy up and down the stairs. Scotty was a wreck the first day. Once we isolated Buddy from Scotty, Buddy acclimated just fine!! He preferred carpet, but got around just fine on the wood floor and trotted up and down stairs. What's cute is he decided Dakota’s new log dog bed is his, so that's where he spent time when Scotty is working. Dakota, as always, was a good sport about sharing!

Within a couple of days I was able to walk Dakota in the vast open area behind our house. While he was jumping for the ball, he pulled a muscle in his hind leg putting him on limited duty with me!

Finally, after a week or so, I recovered from my bruised heel and my tendon got well enough for me to take Dakota to the lake! He loved it, even though I didn’t take a ball so he would strain his muscle any more. I was shocked at how low the lake was after about four years of N California drought.

View from my kitchen—I have never seen the lake this low!

Remember the house staining project? It was a lot of work but it’s 90 percent complete—we’ll finish the rest in Sept—and it looks great!!

Oh Diane, I bet your heart dropped to your toes when you hurt your other foot! I felt awful for you just reading it! I'm glad you still managed to have a good time, and as always, enjoyed your beautiful pics.

Always love your photos Diane. Dakota, it is pure joy to see you romping through the water.
Sounds like Dakota went out in sympathy for his mom.
Has Dakota always loved the water?? Our two paddle in the water so far and I am hoping they become like Dakota!!

Thanks all! Actually, I hurt the SAME foot. After no use for 9 weeks, the muscles and tendons lost all of their former resiliance and failed under "light-use" circumstances!!

Dakota was PETRIFIED of water!!! We were beside ourselves always having had water dogs. If your two are already paddling they'll be teaching Dakota water sports in no time!! The tough part is overcoming their fear of "losing the bottom." Take them deeper gradually . . .
