Default A story of a girl and her puppy dog. Long story.

This is long, but I so wanted to get all of this out now that I have settled from it all.

We went camping last weekend with family (bunch of kids and a bunch of dogs) just outside of Calgary at McLean Creek for four days. On the Monday my sweet little five year old Caitlin tripped and fell smack right onto the fire pit ring (no fire going thank God). Nevertheless, smacking your eye on a hard hunk of cast iron is never a good thing at all. She stood up, screamed, yes blood and om my goodness a gash that was awful.

We thought quickly, apllied pressure and ice, loaded her into the van and sped (not sure how fast) but hubby drove very fast to ethe Childrens hospital in Calgary with the hazards on (usually about and hour and 10 minutes - we made in in 45). She went into shock on the way and scared the poop out of me. We made, thet stiched her up and all was good. It's been a week and she's doing great.

Meanwhile......back at camp. When Caitlin fell, Ollie cried right along with her. He was so worried. When we drove away he went bizerk. My mom said he was not consolable. He cried and cried. It didn't matter what she did to try and console him. This is not usual for Ollie, as he is well socialized and loves people. We were gone for 4 and a half hours.

When we got back to the camp (yes we went back on the insistance of my daughter) she said Ollie would be sad - go figure. She also is a trooper and not much gets her down. Anyway...we got back and Ollie was trying to pull right off his leash. I went to go and get him and he calmed right down. He slowly walked over to Cailtin (right for her, do not pass go, daddy who?) He sat right on her feet, gave doodle kisses to her ankles and looked at her lovingly. He did not leave her the whole night. We even let him sleep with her that night.

Caitlin said, see mommy Ollie was sad. He misseded me. Kids and dogs. How do they know?

He has loved Cailtin since the day he came home to us. You see Caitlin didn't want a puppy to begin with. My dads dogs are not well trained and knock her over all of the time. Oliver seem to know from the very start that this kiddo was going to be a hard nut to crack. He wroked on her from the beginning. He'd lie right on her feet while she would scream at him to go away. He was relentless and calmly laid by her feet for 3 weeks until FINALLY she pet his head. They have been the best of pals since that day.

Here's a picture Of Cailtin and Oliver take about a month ago.

What a precious story, Kimberley! Thank you for sharing it with us. I am SO glad your sweet Caitlin is all right. And what a lucky girl she is to get to grow up with a best friend like Ollie! Those pictures brought tears to my eyes.

Sorry for the injury and the mayhem that followed.. Glad for the recovery, and what a great story of the love our Doods can give. Nice.

What a beautiful little girl you have and Doodle. I'm so sorry to hear of her unfortunate accident. Your heart goes in your throat when something like that happens. Thankfully all is well.

Ahhhh that is so sweet! (the part about Ollie being sad). I am sorry that your daughter is hurt but at least she knows now that she was a good friend to share all her "pains" with!

What a wonderful story, no matter how long! It must have been very frightening for you when Caitlin went into shock....I'm happy to hear that she's ok! Funny how she knew that Ollie was missing her...and Ollie's reaction when she got hurt....the love between man and beast never ceases to amaze me..thanks for sharing your story and heartwarming photos!!

You all must have been terrified! I'm so glad that Caitlin is going to be OK and that she is reunited with her doodle.

Thanks everyone. Now I'm crying again. Yes we are so relieved that Caitlin is doing well, and it just again makes us thankful for our decision to get such a wonderful breed of dog. Ollie and Caitlin will be long time best buddies.

I'm so glad that everything turned out ok. It is amazing the bonds that dogs can make with children (and adults for that matter)
