Default How can a 50 lb doodle pull down a 130 lb adult??

I took Kirby for a walk/hike in a local park...Kirby was totally calm, met several dogs/children (very calmly). Then suddenly he took off and before I knew what was happening he stretched the retractable to its max and pulled me down. Luckily I only have a scraped knee/elbow.

I realize a squirrel ran right in front of him and I think it was too much for him to handle...it's been a rough week here

Besides that...he did so well with all the people/children/dogs...

Kirby....Mommy said a WALK in the park....not a DRAG through the park. There is a difference between the words......

Sorry Leslie.....I got a visual and a giggle.....

I'm with Gene.....sorry but had a giggle for 2 reasons:
1. had a visual (but happy you're okay)

2. Kirby last year did same EXACT thing to me and i did a somersault before landing and being dragged. my weight: 120lbs hahaa

I'm totally cracking up over here! I did more of a superman move than a somersault...I flew and smacked down on my knee/elbow and side of my face (luckily only bruises on knee/elbow which blend in w/my softball bruises)

It must be the retractable leash. He had alot of momentum going by the time he reached the end of it. You gotta brace yourself when a squirrel comes in your path!

I have seen Cesar's show where dogs literally pull their owners off their feet. And they are not always big dogs, either.

It is kind of like how a 120 pound man can easily subdue a much larger woman. Their tendons and muscles are joined differently and it makes them stronger.

Even small dogs can be so powerful. BE CAREFUL!! So glad you are alright. Now I picture you with a cape!!! HaHaHaHa

yeah we rarely use retractables...the only time we do is on the beach or on a walk/hike in the park. Kirby has only done something like this once before (and my husband was walking him)...he usually wanders just a bit in front and then comes back to us. I just have to be more alert next time.

Oh - my hang time was pretty good

I'm glad you're ok Leslie!
Several years ago I had a 115 lb Rottie that I had on a six foot leash outside on the front porch. The phone rang, so I handed the leash to a teenaged visitor who the dog knew and ran inside for a minute. Just as I came back out a squirrel came down the tree not more than 10 feet from her.

She took off like a shot, the girl was airborn and flew right over all 4 steps, and landed on her belly in my front lawn. As soon as the dog realized what she'd done she stopped and came to check on her, but I had a tough time not laughing at the site of her launch. Luckily she was unhurt.

Glad you're okay Leslie.
Bogart went after a squirrel a few weeks back and I literally dove to the grass and held my ground with him! He's 50 LBS too and I'm 118.. I was like tubing across the grass....hahhahaa....This guy saw me and cracked up!
They're strong little doods!!!
I have never used a retractable lead. How do they even work?

Last time I took both dogs to a public park, they yanked their leashes when lunging towards a squirrel. (I had both leashes wrapped around my left hand). I got a big bruise on my hip and scraped up my elbow really bad as I was walking across some gravel/large stones at the time. 20 minutes later, I was hit in the calf with a "putter?"....one of those things they throw for frizbee golf (big bruise there too) Not a good day....
Here is a way to harness their strength.....I just need 1 more doodle!
This is how a breeder I know exercises her dogs....claims they love it.

Glad your ok. But i did giggle. But Beau had a rabbit jump right in front of him. In our back yard (with our new fence) we have some tiger lilies. They are really nice and bushy at the bottom. Well sometime rabbits like to hide in there. Well my husband was cleaning out some of the landscaping in the backyard. And Beau was right beside him. Well as soon as my husband got down to the bushy part of the tiger lilies the rabbit jumped out. ((LOL)) Lets just say the rabbit freaked out. The rabbit jumped right in front of Beau and the two were looking at each other. Beau most have thought toy. And the rabbit thought OH SXXX. (sorry hope that would isn't going to get me into trouble) The rabbit ran off and trying to get out of our fence yard at the same time. Long story short. The rabbit was faster then Beau but not by much. Beau just wanted to play with him. LOL
