Default More food and poop talk, and a doodle play date!

so the more exciting stuff first -- sammy and i got to meet other forum members (caroline and milo) this morning for a playdate. it was super fun and they played great together! we should have a standing ann arbor doodle romp time!

on to the (arguably) less glamorous topic-- food and poop! since many of us seem to be dealing with our doodle's sensitive stomach, here's our update: since sammy has been having mushy poops still and a few vomiting episodes recently, we went back to the vet. the fecal was negative again, so for now we are considering it a "sensitive stomach," maybe food allergies and potentially IBS (to be ruled out down the line). the vet advised that we have her on a bland diet and since we won't be able to cook for her every day, we went with the Science Diet (ID) and hypoallergenic treats - obviously not as high quality natural as i'd been feeding her (solid gold, canidae and merrick) but maybe it will work for her... we are not supposed to give her any other foods at all, no treats or anything, maybe just a bit of yogurt and a digestive supplement.

so, we'll see - i hope she gets better and we can put this behind us! my lawn would appreciate it too - i keep pulling out grass when i try to pick up the yucky poops =(

We did a similar Rx diet routine...tried the ID but when that didn't work we went with the ZD. Just in case the ID doesn't do the trick you may mention it to your vet. Tanner has IBS.

I just took Maya to the vet too and they think she has IBS. We are ruling that out first instead of last due to my observation of things. She always gets yucky poo after kenneling (even though she loves it there), going to my parents house, after the landscapers were here etc.

Just a suggestion.....I am using a GI supplement for Maya. It's called GI supplement and I got it from. Here's the link to it.

Maya was on it about a week and then she started having the best poo of her life. I give her 2 caps at every meal( twice a day). I just sprinkle them on her food. She eats it with no problems. She recently had a bout of diarrhea after coming home from the kennel and landscapers being at the house but it only lasted 2 days and I didn't have to put her on a bland diet to get her back on track like I usu do. I just gave her caps and added about 6-7 pieces of pineapple to her food and she got better on her own. The vet just gave me librium to give to her when I know she is going to be in a stressful place to see if that will help as well.

Sorry this is so long but I know what you are going through. Please feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

Oh and I will be in Ann Arbor on July 22 and I am hoping to find a hotel that will allow my dogs. Any chance you want to meet for a romp if I can find one?

Annie, just wanted to follow up with you on the prescription diet -- what happens after the dog is on it for a month or so? Sammy's poops are definitely much better now on the Science Diet ID, but I don't think I'd like to have her on that forever?? We've got a few weeks of this trial to go, but how did you transition out of it? What do you feed now?

Tanner was on ZD exclusively for a month. I then started to add 1 tsp of Natural Balance Duck and Potato to each 2 cups of the ZD. Next day I added 2 tsp. I did it very slowly to make sure that he could tolerate it. He has been on on 1/2 ZD and 1/2 NB D&P for about a month and I have 40 lbs to go through then he will just be on the NB D&P.

I also give him the canned NB Duck and Potato....about 1/4 cup just to make sure he eats before going to daycare. I began this also a 1 tsp and worked up.

The only time Tanner has had a soft poop in 2 months was once when I gave him yogurt and once when I gave him extra food when he seemed hungry after being boarded over night.

Other than that his poops are great!

I too was like Annie in that after 4mos of Max being on special diet of no dogfood, i only added 1/8cup in one meal a day for 4 days then tried 1/8th cup 2 meals a day for another 4 days as long as poops stayed solid
then i slowly did same w/a 1/4 cup etc till over a period of 3 weeks or so
Max was on dogfood aka Canidae

NO treats were given during this time for any reason.
14months later Max still has nice solid ones
