Default Wildlife encounter interupts a nice game of fetch

We were playing fetch down at the lake today. Its a nice park with bush on either side. I was throwing the ball in the water and the doods were swimming and fetching. Great exercise on a hot day. Low and behold a group of geese swam into sight. Whoever doubts the hunting instinct in LDs needs to see my doods. They swam after the geese. I called, i waved treats, and they kept swimming out into lake Ontartio, and its a big lake. luckily the geese got spooked by the doods and my commotion and flew away. Hershey and Gus about faced and swam back, still with the ball in mouth. I thought the worst was behind me, until a rabbit hoped out from the bush behind me. when i saw it, the doods were in the water, so i scared it away before they got in. they would have chased it into the bush for miles. i leashed them up and we had a nice walk home, although they sniffed the bunny trail very intensly on the way out.

Wildlife is always my fear when taking Tanner hiking. Glad that yours ended well.

A couple of years ago we were vacationing at Whistler and visited the dog beach there. There was a dog out in the middle of the lake chasing a group of ducks. Every time he was about to close in on them, they'd take flight and move a few yards away. I was sure he was going to exhaust himself!

It's scary to think that your doodles would realize they were too tired to swim when they are far from shore. Yikes! I'm glad it all worked out OK!

I'm so glad they got back safely!
Geese can be quite the scrappers... so they could easily have gotten quite a surprise if they had gotten to close. I know people who have geese rather than "guard dogs" and they do a great job of keeping salesmen and stray dogs off the farms.

I have been able to call Tuesday off of deer & a wild turkey, not alot of luck with squirrels, but then all they do is run up the tree.
But now I have stubborn Mr. Marley...... I am just praying he will follow mom's lead if anything pops out!
Yesterday he learned to fetch in the water after watching mom.... I got a little worried because he was flopping his big old paws up high & would keep hitting the stick he was trying to fetch, further and further out in the lake. I thought for sure I was going to end up jumping in and rescuing him!

BoBo is a mean moth hunter. When they fly close to the ground, he chases them snapoping all the way. When he finally gets one, you would think he just took down an elephant.

I'm glad to hear it turned out ok. That is my fear too. If we just have Dex offleash he will listen and come back (after chasing a bit)...we observed that on the beach in NC (he would chase the seagulls). However, if we had both offleash Kirby would probably keep chasing and then Dex would follow him - Kirby has very strong hunter instincts.
