Marley and I are still waiting for the newspaper article. Still no run date in site. Apparently Marley is so excited that he is sick about it. After a day or two of loose stools (so minor we thought little of it) he woke up at 4am Wednesday morning and threw up and was noticeably not himself. So just to be sure I called the vet’s office, and they also took the safe route and told us to bring him in. Well we are glad we did. Turns out they believe he is having some intestinal problems and was dehydrated. Cause could be anything from allergic reaction to food or something he ingested (he is a vacuum)(he has also been scratching a lot and there is some pinkish between his toes on his paws, which indicates allergic reaction), stomach problems, blockage, etc, etc. Course of action yesterday has been to give him an IV for about 15 minutes for dehydration, shot for nausea, special bland dog food for a couple of days, along with a pill to help the diarrhea. The shot made drowsy for just about the remainder of the day. We did take him out for a short walk, but he was definitely not himself, and still was not this morning, but did show a little more life. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road and this is not a reoccurring problem and he is his happy go lucky self soon. He has had soft stool problems twice before and we corrected it with boiled hamburger and rice for a few days, and weaned him off that after a few days and he was fine after. We are considering switching dog foods after this is over, especially if improvement is obvious quickly. The plan is to touch base with the vet tomorrow and if things have not improved we will go back in and do some recommended tests. To start eliminating possibilities of causes.
I was surprised to hear that he was dehydrated. We keep a water bowl in two places in the house, and he drinks from both. Is this a common problem? It has been just as tough on us. We have become probably overly concerned and doting parents, but we are just trying to do right for him. It is troublesome to watch him so down, but just when you think its really bad he start to gnaw on your hand or go after a toy and you just try to tell yourself, relax, he will be fine. This is our first time through a thing like this, so it is a learning experience. We learn more and more about canine behavior as each day passes, even when he is sick. I have been busy as of late, but I have been reading posts. It’s a pleasure to hear so many stories and see pics. We will keep you posted on Marley’s health and newspaper article. Once again, my article is a litle too wordy..I will try to cut back on that. I tend to be long winded whether speaking or typing.

Oh, poor Marley! I hope he feels better soon. We just went through tummy problems with Matey. The vet gave us "Fast Balance GI" to stop the diarrhea and it worked fairly quickly. We fed him white rice and ground turkey for a few days. Today we started back to his normal diet of raw food. Hopefully Marley will have a quick recovery too!

Hey Annie, Matey is a Marley lookalike. If you slipped your avatar into my photos, I would not even notice it was a different dog. The resemblence is uncanny!!

I am sorry that Marley is sick, but so glad that you are getting vet treatment. The pink on his paws and itching could be a yeast infection, which can be caused by allergies.
What food are you feeding? I am still not sure that the dog food industry is free from the toxins added when the food scare was in full force. I had a puppy severely dehydrated from that and he had very runny bowel movement and vomiting. He was better when he started IVs for liquid and antibiotics. I can't reccomend that, since antibiotics can cause yeast infection, but be aware of the food...if the change in diet helps, continue to stay away from the fillers...corn gluten, any gluten! No need to have it. I look for foods that dont' have corn at all. I use Canidae, so do many breeders and places like the Guide Dogs of America. Also be aware of the ingredients in his treats. A little canned pumpkin (not pie mix, just pumpkin) can soothe his intestinal tract too. You can also give some PeptoBismol. I give Pepto to any of my dogs or puppies with loose bowels or vomiting and it is usually gone in one dose. If not....vet care! (Remember it makes stools black!) If there is a lot of mucous in the stools, could be parasites. If you have not yet taken a stool sample in, you should probably do so. Good luck...I really hope that Marley is feeling better soon! |

Thanks for the advice Jac. I am sure he will be up and running soon. We have been feeding him "By Nature" dog food. It was recommended by our breeder. It has no corn, gluten or soy according to the label. Canidae is on our short list of what we are considering to move to. I see that they do not have a puppy type per se. Should that be a concern? I am of the mind that puppy food has more nutrients that the young pups needs in its fast growing years. Marley is 14 weeks Friday. I would have to go back and check on the treats, but I am confident that we were just as careful selecting those.

hi Maddjaxx,
We have gone through food allergy issues with Dexter. We tried Canidae for a bit, but it didn't seem to help. However 1) we did not eliminate treats and 2) it has helped other doodles on this forum. I am certainly not a vet or an expert, but my advice would be to eliminate treats for a bit if/when you do the food switch. If I had to do it over again with Dexter, I would do the treat elimination with the change in food. Or at least I would choose higher quality treats or those with a minimal number of ingredients. Of course I do not know if your dog does have food allergy issues or if there is another cause of his discomfort. Either way he is adorable and I really hope he feels better soon

You are welcome, I agree that most puppy food is specifically prepared for the needs of puppies. But I am also convinced that the difference usually isn't that great. The only time I would be more concerned is if you need a large breed puppy food because it is designed for slower growth, helping with joint problems of larger pups. Canidae label says it is for puppies, adults, etc. but it has a separate "silver label" can for senior dogs.
We feed canned in the morning and night and free feed dry during the day...many people don't feed canned at all and also don't free feed...so we are the rebels! LOL (But our dogs are healthy! |

Not sure if that was said tongue in cheek Annie, being from CT, but I got Marley from a breeder here in Wisconsin. Wilson Creek Labradoodles in Spring Green. Mother was a white labradoodle and father was a red poodle.

No tongue in cheek at all. Matey came to us from a wonderful breeder in Texas! We looked at a few breeders and spoke to her about her program and felt that it was a good match for us even if it was half way across the country. Mateys grandpa is a red poodle so perhaps that is why they have the same look. Is Marley's birthday May 4th too?

Wow...sorry to hear about MATEY
i am with Jac...and we had illness issues in the past with Max and peanut Did they check the stool yet just in case? A bland diet really can help along with canned pumpkin. like Jac said if you see mucous lining in the poop it ...then bring in a stoll sample for safety's sake. Hope all goes well and please keep us updated on Matey and his progress.

I did fail to mention it, but we did take a sample in when he first went in and no problems were found there. Thanks to all the well wishers, the wishes have come true and Marley is feeling much better almost back to normal. He has a little bounce in is step again and I am sure he will be 100% very soon. The cause? Not 100% sure. I am calling the vet back today to give her a report and then further discuss his itching/scratching/gnawing. It's as if he has fleas, but he does not. It is not a constant thing but it is enough to notice that it is not normal. We are guessing some sort of allergy, but what??? Who knows. I am not really sure how you even go about determining what it could be in a dog? Anybody know? I am sure I will find out, and get it licked....no pun intended!
Well I am glad his dispostion is much better. It was great having him follow me around as I prepared to go to work this morning. He did not even do that before he was sick, but I liked it!!
