Default Chloe's 1st 3 mile walk.

We have been walking Chloe from day one , we got her at 10 weeks old. All of our walks were in our town or at River Park. The most she could do was 2 1/2 miles. We live near La Purisima Mission and have walked the 3 mile loop around the state park property for years. Today it was Chloe's turn. She is now just over 4 1/2 months old and did fantastic! She kept pace and was off leash for the last 1 1/2 miles. Walking by horses and other dog walkers. her only problem was when she wanted to chase two joggers ! They had to stop and pet her .... so cute. We are going back on sunday to let her explore some more.

What gorgeous pic's! I wonder if you could help me out here. I walk Lauren (9mths) about 1/4 mile in the morning, 2 & 1/2 after school pick up (3pm) and 5 min walk at night. I have been told I am over walking her. I don't want to put pressure on her young joints etc. But we would like to walk her for longer eventually.... when can we step it up to 4/5 miles? and then more?

Hi Lauren, this had been a concern to us and we have read threads on the forum to do with injury and joint & hip problems but after talking to our vet & doing research it seems to be a lot of common sense . As far as joint & hip most of those problems are heriditary, not to say damage cant be done on hard jaring runs on pavement. Our walks are brisk and about an hour long and on trail when possible which = to approx 3 miles. Our coastal weather is cool for the most part & we take plenty of water. Dehydration and extreme fatigue are the main concerns. We take breaks & slow down when needed by watching Chloe. We have done 5 miles @ 70 degrees, took our time and had water breaks & within a 1/2 hour of being home Chloe is running laps in the back yard again. Also our vet told us of a man who rode his bike while running his dog and literally ran his dog to death so just watch your puppy and use your instincts, At this age chloe can keep up with us on foot but not on a bike. Again use your best judgement, you know your dog best. I guess its about baby steps and working up to it, if we get winded then we know she is too. A lot of times we rest for us as much as for her .I am a fit 50 year old & Krys is a fit 40 year old but we dont have the energy of Chloe. We hope this helps. M & K

Thank you for such a fab answer. Very reassuring and insightful. We live in Scotland.... it's NEVER hot! haha. Our daily walk is interlaced with fresh water streams and a huge river. We take water to try and 'get in there' before she drinks from the streams. I ride with her on a leash or of leash for about 5/10 mins if I can't fit the normal walk in. At the moment, if we (me and my 7yr daughter) want a long walk (6miles +) we leave our girl in the car. I hope about 18months Lauren will be ready to come with us. Dreadful to hear about the guy who ran his dog to death ;( Chloe looks like a longer haired version of Lauren!

How very fortunate to live near streams & a river. I would fly fish on my walks with Chloe Chloe loves water too.

There have been quite a few discussions in the past years on this.....
I found this short one that I agree with...
running/jogging (young dog)

The whole point being not to force the pup....that it is able to stop, take a break, sniff around, as compared to dragging it along on a bike.
I limit my pups to about a 2 mile walk at a time up until 9 months, after a majority of their growing is done, then they are allowed to run some with the others off leash if they are doing good at recall.

markrys- your pup is beautiful! I always get a couple of those in a litter with my line, I LOVE the silky jet blacks!
Recent puppy pics I received...
