Have any of you heard the expression 'break the coat' ??
My groomer that I went to this morning wanted to cut Jasper's hair down to 1 cm long to get the hair to grow back in more curly... I didn't let her do it, but I did let her cut it down to about 2" all over... also, is it normal not to trim the tail the same length as the body? He has longer hair on his tail now, and to me it looks funny... and she didn't get the hair out of his ears or trimmed out from in between his pads on his paws... (she didn't do Tuxedo's ears or paws either, so I don't buy the excuse that since it was Jasper's first time that he wouldn't sit still) ...curious to hear about your first grooming experiences...thanks!! hi becka
Jasper is 6 months old today! And in at 42 lbs... here are some before and after...we liked it longer but he was too hot and he kept getting tangles on his legs... The 2 on the bed are from this morning and the last 3 are from tonight after grooming... She blow dried him after I asked her not to, so I'll squirt him down tomorrow with water to get his hair to curl back up... We are glad we had him cut, but it is not exactly what we wanted...but he behaved and he didn't freak out...so we will give it another try in a few months! It was a good experience overall... Lemme know what you think and if you could post a recent pic of Sadie, I wanna see that cute face!! |

never heard the term *break the coat*..but, i think it might be another meaning puppy cut where they ll just cut down to the shortest length and let it all grow back evenly..
the first time i took Toby in i was really disappointed..they gave him a puppy cut and i felt it was way too short..so the second time in i gave instructions to leave it long..only to cut it evenly all around..and leave the tail just trim d at the edge so it d be longer the rest of the body.. when i went back..though the cut was a left a bit longer..i was still disappointed that the cut was still too short.. Toby went 2 yrs without a full groom..only getting an occasional trim from me..and it s when he did get his full groom..i did it myself cuz i could nt trust another groomer to give him the cut i wished....BTW, i think Jaspers groomer did a great job..the hair on the tail..IMO, should be longer..longer the better as long as even all around like a pom pom... |

Here's what Sadie looks like now (or a couple of weeks ago--these are the most recent pix I have on the computer). She'll be 6 months in a week. I don't think her coat is as long as Jasper's was (or still is, for that matter). He looks really adorable--even with the blown-out look.

WOW! Those pictures of Sadie looks so similar to Juneau! I had to do a double take!
We've never had Juneau groomed (he's 11 months now) and I don't think we'll ever have to. We have clippped the fur around his face a little, but that's it. He does shed quite a bit so I guess that's the trade off. For our next doodle we are looking into getting an Australian one or at least a multgenerational. Either way, grooming will be in our future! Becka, if you do get Sadie trimmed, let me know how it goes! Sadie and Juneau have such similar coats that it might quell my reservations about it! |

Sadie doesn't really shed (nothing ever comes off when I pet her or pull on her coat), although I do brush her every other day or so and there's always some hair in the brush, and occasionally I find long cream-colored hairs on my black clothing. Did Juneau always shed, or did it start more recently, like when his puppy coat changed?
Pix, please?!? |

As soon as I get my new apple computer I will finally be able to upload the pictures from my camera again. My old computer (apple laptop from '03) finally gave me the warning that my start-up disc was full, fedex should actually be delivering the new one today! Yeah!
Juneau shed very little as a puppy, but when his coat changed - oh my! There was fur EVERYWHERE, all the time. I'm sure if we were a little more on the ball with brushing him (usually only once a week) it would help. I love Juneau's fur though so I wouldn't change it. Jasper'sMomma: I had never heard the tearm 'break the coat' before so I asked the groomer at the doggie daycare I bring Juneau to and she didn't quite know what it meant either. She did however speculate that it was something to do with brushing the dog incorrectly... |

deepnite- thanks, I think his cut is growing on me, too...
Nikkiey- The description my groomer gave me is that you cut the hair down to only 1cm or so, basically shave them...and that forces the coat to 'start over', this supposedly done to get the hair grow back curlier...Since I'd never heard of such a thing I told her no and that the 2 inch all over cut was good enough... I did ask her if going shorter would make his hair look curlier, and that's when she suggested 'breaking the coat' ... |

Hi guys
I think there might be some validity to the the term "Breaking the Coat" I live in Melbourne Australian, i have a 18 month old Chocolate doodle with a wool coat, When Cody was around 6 months old we had him at the groomers where when he got home he looked very much like the photos in this thread. We came into the summer and he was getting very hot so i let the groomer shear him down to about an inch, since that day he went really curly and only when he has a full full coat does the curls loosen out. Now i am not sure if this was going to happen anyway when the adult coat came in or not |

This is a video we found on grooming. Has anyone used a comb like this? It must have a razor edge up in it. Im interested in grooming Chloe at home to preserve the look of her coat. She has a wavy coat now. Thanks Mark & Krystal.
