Ruff has been here almost a week, and already we cannot imagine life without him.
He was 8 weeks old on Sunday. He is a phantom labradoodle in colouring and an F1B, who is quite 'poodley'. We picked a poodley pup from the litter because our daughter has allergies. Nighttimes: these are good now, he is still sleeping in the same room as me. He usually wakes between 1-2am and I take him out for wees. Then he wakes again around 6am, for the day. He usually resettles quite quickly with just a pat through the bars of the crate after I have put him back in. Over the next week i am going to start by sleeping in a different room, and setting an alarm to wake me at 2am. Then I will spend the rest of the night with him (so i don't wake hubby climbing back into bed all cold from going outside). I am hoping by 12 weeks old he will manage 10-6. Potty training: Also good. Ruff has done one poo and one wee inside, total. I am at home with him all day and I watch him like a hawk if he is awake. As soon as he wakes from a nap we go outside and also every hour. When he pooed inside i just picked him up and rushed outside saying 'outside, outside' urgently as I went. When he goes outside i say 'be quick' as he is performing and as soon as he has finished I say 'YES!" and give him a liver treat. Training: This is going OK. I handfeed Ruff and get anybody who visits to handfeed too. So I say 'sit' and lure a sit with his breakfast kibble, then 'down' and lure a down etc. He knows "sit" "down" "stand" "leave it" "off" however he doesn't yet do them without a lure. Socialization to people: This is going great. We are aiming for 100 people by 12 weeks and we are well on our way. Ruff has been to a friends house for the day; Visited the welfare centre after Mondays latest round of quakes; been out to the town centre in my bike basket and been to school and had cuddles all around. Socialization to dogs: This is on hold until he has had his second vaccinations, however he is booked in for puppy kindergarten starting the first week of July. He will be 10 weeks old. Bite inhibition: We are doing fine here. Handfeeding helps no end. Ruff is learning to mouth gently. If he presses a little hard with those puppy teeth, then we yelp and act all affronted. As soon as Ruff sits back, or lies down we make up and carry on. As he gets older we will yelp for ever less pressure until he is barely touching us. Then we will stop the mouthing altogether, by 14-16 weeks. Challenges for week 2: The big thing this week is leaving him home alone for short times. I will start putting him in his crate when he is awake with a stuffed kong or tasty chew. Then I will leave the room for 5 minutes. Then return. We will up the times as quickly as possible until I can leave him whilst I pop out to the shops etc. We also will continue with the obedience training, and introduce the 'come' game this week. How are those of you with little puppies getting on? It would be great to compare notes! Katie and Ruff. |

Ruff is so cute
Barski is 20 weeks old so he is a little ahead of Ruff but he is doing great. He just graduated from puppy school last Saturday and he was the best in the class! (At least according to me We have a doggie door and he has full run of the house and yard both day and night. He hasn't had a potty accident in over a month. He sleeps in our bedroom on the floor next to my wife, he checks to make sure she is there one of two times a night but other than that he never makes a sound. We have a small farm with a cow, two goats and nine chickens. He goes out with us everyday to do the chores. He will chase the goats a little and he will go after the chickens until the alpha chicken starts to chase him. Once that happens the game is on! I really need to video it because it is just too fun to watch. The chicken can't run fast enough to catch him so he runs until he gets away and then he come back for more. Once in a while she will peck his behind and then he runs for the gate and wants to get out. So far he never bites at them and I hope if he continues to 'play' withy them everyday he will not get aggressive but we keep a close watch on them. We try and take him with us as much as we can and he loves to meet people. Also we took him boating and he took to the water like a duck. In fact he jumped off the back of the boat to swim after a duck that we were feeding. At first I was afraid that he would swim too far but he only got about 15 feet away before he came back. So far he has been a joy. He seems to know what he can chew and what to leave alone and he is very obedient. We are very happy with him. Roger |
