CeCe, my 7 month old, graduated from obedience training class tonight. And, after class, she took her CGC test and passed with flying colors! I am soo proud of her! She is a fraidy cat or dog I should say so I was worried that she might freak out in some portions of the test, but she surprised the heck out of me and didn't even flinch when they wheeled the chair past her nose. We would really like to become a therapy team but do not know what the next steps are. Can some of you guys fill me in about how to go about becoming certified? Thanks for listening and for any advice. GiGi

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!
I sooooo remember how good I felt too when Bogart accomplished this! I live in Michigan.....you in New Mexico. I'm not sure if Dr. Paws can help you get certified, because I don't know if they are active there. BUT! Maybe they can help you find our where to go! Good luck and ENJOY your smart, obedient doodle!

Congrats on the huge accomplishment!! To me, it's huge because I have an extremely high energy almost 9 month old boy who would in no way be able to pass the CGC test. Though I love him to pieces, I would also love it if he could not get so distracted and think that everything and everyone was made for play, but we're working on it!!

Thanks guys! Lindamarie, I haven't been able to find any local organizations for therapy training on line, but think that I will contact the national therapy dogs org and find out what might be available to us. Nikkiey, don't worry, CeCe is also high energy and has a non-stop play drive. I had to literally run her for hours before we left for obedience class so that she would concentrate. If there is any way you can take him to class I think that you would be surprised at the difference it makes! We took one at the local kennel club. Most of the puppies were wild in the beginning but all improved dramatically and 5 passed the CGC. I have a question for anyone. Where is everybody? When I first logged on this site was pretty active, but seems to be very quiet lately. I miss all of the questions and stories!

We bring Juneau to classes every Monday and they are a mixture of obedience and agility. I also have to take him for an hour run before each class so that he can actually pay attention! It's nice to know I'm not alone!! My husband and I also both work full time so we bring Juneau to doggy daycare twice a week where they also try to drain some more of his energy, I used to remember when he was 4 months old and he would come home from DD and would just cuddle up on his bed and sleep. Now, he comes home, grabs a toy and just wants to play some more!!
I never knew about the CGC test before (never really thought of therapy dogs or any kind of certification) but now I've printed out the 10 tests and have them on my fridge. My goal is to have Juneau succeed in each of these by his 1st birthday - my husband thinks I'm crazy, but I'm determined!! |

GiGi.....sorry you can't find one. I hope National can help you.
I'm going to do a little research if I get a chance today, to see if I can help. Nikkiey! Good for YOU!! Doodles are such bright dogs that it's a shame not to share them with others. We get so much JOY out of sharing Bogart and he just loves it. EDITING TO ADD: GiGi......try this website. They may be able to help you. This is actually where Bogart is certified through. There are some phone numbers etc. in the bottom right hand corner: http://therapydogs.com/

Oh I bet you guys can do it! Although I know that CeCe is very smart I also know that she is teenage puppy wild and was afraid that she would not be able to concentrate long enough to make it through her classes, but surprise she did. Luckily I am home most days so am able to work and play with her a lot and therefore it's not so intense in the evenings, although 4-8 pm is still the worst behavior of the day. Yeah weren't the young months so much easier. The saving grace is that word is that we are now in the most difficult stage and hopefully it will all start to improve. Of course just a few of those sweet looks, cuddles, and kisses make up for all their bratty ways. Have never loved a dog more ! Hang in there!

Lindamarie, sorry I miss your post, but thanks so much for the info. I printed out the numbers and will follow up when we return from vacation. We are leaving for a weeks trip to the Bahamas. This will be our first time to leave CeCe and am really sad even though excited about the trip. Happily my dear friend is moving in or don't think I could go!
