Murphy is now almost 5 months old (time flies doesn't it!). She certainly has added a little life to our family, and has been a great companion for our Golden Retriever Jai Mahasi (aka 'Moose'). I think she will be a little taller than we originally thought, as she fairly long legs for a 'pup'. We finish level 1 puppy school and will be starting level 2 next week. of course, she learned sit; stay; down; and walking on a leash, as well as 'leave it', but that one is a bit more difficult for her. She is crate trained, and really doesn't mind going into her crate, sometimes just to get away from the action. We have a crate on each floor -two of them are the soft sided dark mesh, very difficult to see in. Sometimes I will call her and she won't respond ..... I'll look in her crate and I can almost see her smiling at me, as though she were intentionally hiding. One habit she's started is standing up to see what's on the counters in the kitchen. Of course, we try to remember to put things back from the edge, but we aren't trained very well and we sometimes forget. She really didn't get into too much at Christmas, although she sure likes going into the bathroom and stealing pine cones from a decorative pot. (yes, I know - close the door). She destroyed a couple soft Christmas decorations, but overall not too bad. (Our Golden was much worse at that age getting into things). My wife and I will be sitting in the family room reading or watching TV and we will notice that Murphy has something in her mouth, and we shout "Now what do you have", but most of the time it's just a bully stick, but lately she's been getting into things from the counter. (any advice?). Anyway - last night we didn't pay too much attention to her as we had some things we had to get done. I'm working at the computer and I hear her crunching on something. I figured it was a bully, but when I looked back she was chomping on my library card, which had been in my wallet. She grabbed the wallet off the table, and the card fell out. No big deal - I put the wallet somewhere else, and there were only a couple of holes in the Library card. A few minutes later I heard the sound of paper being shredded - she pulled a gift certificate off of the refrigerator! Irony - it's a 35 dollar gift certificate to a pet store! Guess I better turn that in before nothings left. So, I go back to work, and a few minutes later I hear some quiet 'chomping' ... I look over, and she has a $100 dollar bill! The good news is that it was just wet and crumpled. Let me assure you that my wife and I don't have money like that just laying around - it was with a bank deposit I was to have made. So, after I learned my lesson, I played with her and 'Moose' for a while, and the rest of the evening was fine. So, who trains whom?
Here's a couple of recent pictures. One of her in action (Cindy asked if Murphy ever ran at full speed) - another one of her and our oldest daughter, and another of her, Moose, and one of our grandchildren. (Yes, I am that old!) Happy New Year, Bill Last edited by Bill C; 01-05-2011 at 08:27 PM. |

Seems like we have had a lot of counter surfing going on with quite a few doodles here as of late. We all have to get our doodles free of jumping on counters, tables etc. I would suggest a can with coins in it and set her up for the surfing....then rattle the can with a loud NO! Or a squirt bottle with water in the face!......and a loud NO! These doods are just so interested in everything! We had quite a few things torn up too before Bogart finally learned through some of the above mentioned corrections we used. Yet, still......he loves to take paper towel or tissue out of waste baskets and rip it up.

We were at a dog store today - I had to laugh when I saw a bumper sticker: MY LABRADOODLE IS SMARTER THAN YOUR HONOR STUDENT! (Of course I had to laugh) Bill |
