Sheila, I had the same issue the first summer with my labradoodle. She was so lethargic that I even took her to the vet's for a checkup. But I finally realized that she just had a very tough time with the heat, especially as a puppy. I made sure to keep plenty of cool water around for her and limit her activity. As Donnie says, she also quickly figured out where every a/c register in the house is and has claimed them for her own. I did have to learn the "hot asphalt" lesson; we were waiting in the schoolyard for my granddaughter and Chouette kept picking up her feet until I realized how hot the black surface must have been for her. As soon as I took her into the shade she was fine.
Now that she's three, heat doesn't seem to bother her quite as much, but she still likes to be cool. And she loves ice and snow!

I don't think that black doodles get hot any faster then other colors. My Lilha dose better then her sister in the heat. Her sister is very very light yellow. I live in houston it is HOT!!! We have a dog door. I live on 25 acres. I would say Lilha spends at least half the day outside running around. All my dogs have free run of the hole property and come in and out of the house as they please.

Max is jet black and handle the heat MUCH better than Peanut who's lighter colored BUT she also has a double coat like golden as she is goldendoodle and i find shaving her down in mid summer is the solution. Max as black as he is amazes me when he lays in the sunlight while peanut seeksout the shade OR HOGS the fan hahhaaaaaaaaa i really think it depends on the dog's coat and makeup it's like one of my kids since a baby and now 18yrs old has trouble with heat to this day while the other two are fine. it's their makeup (genetics that is)

the 4th of July weekend got pretty hot around here..nearly 100 degrees
and the dogs were in no mood to go out.. but, at one time they did go out and within just a few minutes were panting for water..i found that a ice cube on the belly and groin area did alot to cool Toby off.. even their water bowls..i put in hand fulls of ice to cool their water down.. |
