That is awesome! Lucy loves sticks and we have a huge yard (for our neighborhood, that is) with plenty laying around. If only I could teach her to get them and place them back by the firepit!

We have had many such pups...do your best to watch them...teach them the "leave it" command and the "drop it" command as quickly as possible. Try to have the pup tethered to you so that he is not running free...this will also create a bond and teach the pup to look to you for cues, plus you can quickly reward good behavior and correct negative behavior.
Now, that being said, it IS dangerous for dogs to chew and swallow wood...splinters could get caught in their gums...BUT my dogs have been doing this and we have not had (knock on wood) any medical issues. I am not advocating it...because there are obvious dangers...but I would tell you to do your best to eliminate this behavior but don't panic when it happens. |
