Default Good doggies.........BAAAAD Hubby!

My husband was getting ready to work on my daughters car.
He opened the gate and drove the car into the driveway, went into the house, let the dogs out, and sat down to watch a half hour show.
He then got up and went outside, only to find the dogs laying on the driveway, still in the yard, 8 ft gate still wide open.
We live about a football field away from an interstate, 2 lane hywy, and have a busy road in front of our house.
If anything would have happened to my babies.......hit or lost!!
He was surprised & glad they stayed but....BAAAADDD, BAD hubby, GOOD GOOD dogs!!! I am so happy they are good listeners!

OH! Don't even get me started on this!!
Did many of our husbands take the same class???
Okay........I seriously had to tell my husband that if any of my dogs ever go hurt..or God forbid killed........the locks would be changed and he would be OUT!
Sounds harsh, huh? Well.......it's juuuuuuuust the way I feel. I take such care to make sure my dogs have always been safe. I expect the same from a hubster!
grrrrrrrrr

But seriously......these guys are no different than taking care of a toddler. Sure they behave good, and then something catches their fancy & they bolt off.
My hubby & I go round and round about this. There is a part of a trail that I walk & the road is right above a stretch of it. He thinks that I should train them to heel (they are trained) and walk them beside us...even at that spot. Although they are trained, there are deer, bunny's, wild turkey, etc. that roam within that area. I have had success calling them off animals after they have started to bolt after them, and in this situation, with the road (busy), with my luck, they'd chase the critter's right up & in to it. I need more distance till I take chances off leash. So...I leash them up & just block out his whining when he comes with me.
Better than scraping them of the road!

My husband is even more protective than I am with the dogs and puppies, if that is possible!

OK! Not me, but a perfect example.
Bogart and I were walking on Saturday and he found a tree. I stopped and right behind him was this adorable little Yorkie sniffing.
This guy is soooooooo tiny! I know where he lives and suddenly it hit me! HE'S LOOSE!!

Now this street isn't always busy, but this day, they had soccer and a baseball game going on in the park across the street. Cars were buzzing by.
I must have looked like an idiot as I was yelling "NO, NO, STOP!" at all the cars zooming by. This guy wouldn't have had a chance!
He was running around Bogart and then bolting toward the street and back.

Of course, Bogart now wants to play so he's enticing this Yorkie to go berserko, while I'm holding the leash yelling "NO" to Bogart and "COME" to the puppy.
I headed toward the front porches of about 5 houses trying to get the Yorkie away from the street. He wouldn't let me near him with Bogart there...so I frantically tried to get him home.

YEP! Another unlocked gate!!!
Finally the kids came out and called him in the yard...........of course, no one said a word to me...the crazy lady! I didn't know I could MOVE like that!

Doesn't it make you mad that people don't even thnak you? Amazing!
I am glad you helped...

Just a few minutes ago, 2 of our dogs got out ... same thing...I was at the computer when Dave shouts "Jac, help! Dogs out!" so I rush out, he said that they were in the (open) garage and bolted...I said, "Don't panic, find treats, they were in the garage until you came out, they won't run off if we are calm." But he paniced, tossed me the keys and he grabbed leashes and took off (in a snit) ...I drove up the street (not a busy street, thank goodness) asked some families, nope, no dogs...headed back home, went to the VERY busy, very scary street (just a block or so away) and didn't see them, came back up and the family (on a walk) said that they just saw the dog with a man (Dave), and I looked up to see Gerry dash toward the house...got there, Dave said he had Lexie but the other was still gone...I told him that she was just there...he retrieved her when she was trying to get in to play with the boy dogs! LOL Thank goodness they run up the hill and not down, when they go out. Up hill is a quiet community with very sparse traffic...downhill gets into blind curves and very fast traffic.

Other than being very thirsty, they were fine....

But, who let them out? NOT ME! I said, "Don't be blaming me..." and he snapped, "It was me!" (So, I walked away gloating... But oh, so glad that they were back home.)

There is something about spring...

Must be something in the air, Aero jumped the fence today too! She has been doing this when she is without humans, but has not if we are out there. So she has been supervised in all yard time for a few weeks now. Today, she started to climb and I said DOWN, which has worked 100% in the past, but not today. Up and over the fence she goes and gone across the street into the neighbours. I run and leap the fence myself (it is only 4ft, and I am a 6ft 3in former varsity basketball player, so no sweat). I calmly walk up to her smelling something. WHAT?? The neighbour threw out 2 cooked hams, 1/2 dozen raw chicken legs, a few breasts, and some rice cakes, all at their back stoop . I got to Aero before she eat anything so she didnt get a huge reward for bad behaviour, but she is heading to the dog house. I am debating a wired invisible electric fence to go with our real fence to keep her in. Any thoughts?

Geeze, Todd...I can't blame Aero for jumping the fence for that one!

Gracie has been jumping the 4' x-pen surrounding the puppies! She loves the puppies (and she likes to steal any treat or toy they might have) so I can't keep her out! I worry that she'll land on a puppy, but so far she has been very, very careful...grrrr.

You might try an electric fence Todd, but I think that with goodies tossed out onto the stoop like that, your poor dog would risk just about anything to get to it! Maybe talk to the neighbors and tell them you will buy them a trash can!

I HATE stuff like this. I just love my dog, and my parents are really careful with theirs too (a big Rhodesian ridgeback and a yorkie, lol!) so it drives me crazy when people don't treat their animals well. I pulled a tiny dog out of traffic one day and went door to door to find their owners. When I did, they were like, "Oh, he gets out all the time. Its the kids leaving the door open" as though it didn't matter. My neighbours also often let their dogs out free to get to the road. They chase my car scaring me half to death that I'm going to hit them.
Why on earth would you get a dog if you didn't care whether it lived or died? Not to mention the trauma you put other people through if they hit the poor thing!

That is the million dollar question...why, indeed???
I think that sometimes people are just so selfish that they only think of their dog as a "thing", not a living being...sad.
