We had our first training for Tia to be my service dog today! Our trainer actually made the session longer and we all got a work out! I had not been out in the sun for so long and for such a long time (2 + hours) and it felt so good! I feel freedom at last is here and real!!! We got a great report too! Our trainer said we "exceeded his expectations"! I was so tired when we came inside I was shaking but in a good way. Tia is doing so well he said that in a months time we will be a real team! Of course he will be doing training with us for longer than that and is our trainer for the life of the dog. I couldn't sleep last night because I was nervous now I can't sleep because I am on an emotional high!!!

When I went to do my 15 min of training tonight I was quickly humbled! I will call my trainer because I couldn't get things right. It ended with me picking something easy to end on and ending after about 9 min. My frustration was running so high that it was becoming a mess. So I felt it was better to end it on a positive note and call my trainer tomorrow. It would be a shame to get an "A" grade and and "F" all on the same day! That will teach me to have a fat head!

Kathy....i am sooooooooooooooooo HAPPY FOR YOU !!!!!! wow you're on your way with TIA......congrats!!
and have a very dedicated trainer that cares like reputable breeders like Jac and Todd which is important!!! NOW remember it's going to be a roller coaster and ANYTIME you are frustrated you end the training but on a happy note with some easy TIA can do, praising her and taking a break. I can't express in words what I feel that you are in assistance training and YES you'll have lots of homework and TIA will learn You are the alpha thus at times training will go GREAT and as you progress expect a few setbacks or having to go back to earlier basics. THAT can be TOTALLY NORMAL, these doodles are very intelligent and like to push buttons YET LOVE TO be stimulated!! Max a few times was a bucking bronco when HE THOUGHT HE"D END training and GET his way I hung out and let him wear himself out, then did a simple short training session and from there on in he was a dollbaby wanting to train/learn more. THE BOND that occurs ...........is awesome!!!! remember though some of the games etc you do might cease during training or until certain things are established. Those EXTRA homework you get are WELL WORTH THE EFFORT as it's TEAMWORK YOU and TIA ....the team and both of you learn. ok i'll stop writing a novel here BUT can you tell how excited I am !!! ((((((((((((kathy and tia))))))))))) keep us updated please

Kathy...you don't need to worry...first of all, you didn't need to overdo the training (I understand your excitement) because Tia can only absorb so much per day and it will become boring for her. So, just stick to your daily alloted time.
Secondly, Tia could sense your frustration. Try to relax and have fun and you will see amazing strides! You ended on a positive note...which is perfect! Good job! |

By the way, much of the training is for YOU and not Tia...so practice with Buddy (or even DH) if Tia has had her daily time...once you are comfortable with the training and you can learn to just wait patiently for Tia to respond, then you will move along at a comfortable pace...you'll see!
Don't beat yourself up...I really admire you for tackling this...it is not an easy training! |

Kathy, that is sooooooo AWESOME!! I know the feeling!!
If you think you're on a high now, just wait until Tia can assist you everywhere you go! The bond is unbelievable!

One thing I have noticed that is awesome, is she looks to me a lot. It seems we are bonding more than we have before. She sulks a bit but in the end she wants to be close to me and she really looks at me for direction!
