Well, I tool Madge to a NEW doggie Daycare that just opened up very near our house. When I went to pick her up they said that she had a great time and they kinda gave me a list of the things she did and who she interacted with. She looked happy to see me and very tired. When we got home I noticed that she was limping and as the evening wore on, she would get up very slowly and walk like a very old dog. I called them to ask if she had any incedents while ther and they said no, that she had a good time but did play and chase the ball almost non-stop for several hours.
Later, I noticed that she was licking her feet and when I examined them more closely, I noticed that she had actually wore her pads down to almost raw! Poor thing! It hurts her to walk on them. When she got up this morning, she would not go out to potty and she has not gone out at all today! It is now 6 PM! She has not had any water all day either....just lying around. She still gets up to move from room to room to be near me, but that is about it. I am going to have my husband carry her out so she can go potty, and then I will wrap her poor feet with a small pad in vet wrap as directed by my internet research. I hope she will leave them alone. POOR MADGE!!! Does anyone else have any suggestions? Leslie |

Leslie, I am so sorry! Poor girl...
There is really not much you can do about foot pad injuries...you can, of course, keep watch for infection but other than that, they will heal on their own. The vets really don't do anything for them either. Once, my dogs ran away (all of them) and were gone about 2 hours, running in the mountains...sharp rocks, sticks, weeds, probably glass...and certainly hot pavement (it was summer) and they had the same problem. They could not walk at all...although at first I thought it served them right! LOL But I felt so sorry for them...it took about 3 days before they were more normal... I would ask the vet if there is something you can give her for pain...and if you should put anything on her pads to assist the healing...but I suspect that she will just have to heal on her own. I think that I would report this to the day care. They should monitor the dogs and not allow steady play like that, with no resting...especially if it is a new place and most of them use gravel...if dogs are not used to gravel, it can cause their pads to be injured. They should know better... I would bet that Madge is not the only one affected... |

This is an indoor place with a thick rubbery pad-like floor. It's new and actually very nice. I did tell them about her feet and they apologized about that. Told me they would limit her ball chasing and require her to take breaks nextt time. I like these guys because they are just starting out and do not have a million dogs attending yet so they can spend time getting to know her. She was one of only 5 dogs there that day.
I put some lidocaine jelly on her pads and wrapped her feet last night. Suprizingly, they were still on this morning, but I took them off and she went outside willingly with her tail wagging. We'll see what the day brings. |

Bogart went to Day Care a lot when he was younger and this never happened! Wonder why?

so sorry to hear about Madge's injury .........hoping that rest for a few days and maybe booties will help her heal asap.
all dogs need to take breaks......so maybe put a limit on how long she can play and when she should have say a 1/2hour or so rest?

I do hope Madge is doing much better! This happened to Marley about a year ago (she's 19 months now) - she ran nonstop at camp, came home and her paws were completely raw. She favored them, limped, licked them and just seemed absolutely miserable. I told the camp from that point on to please pay special attention to her paws and to give her an afternoon off if she is staying for several days. Now her pads have toughened up and do not seem as sensitive as they used to be. She has had a couple paw issues but we boarded her for 1 week over the holidays and she did great. My camp said they place an oitment (I really wish I could remember what it was) on their paws if they are there numerous days to help keep them from getting irritated. Hope Madge is better now!
