Default Recall....

So, the storms were over and the dogs REALLY needed a walk, so we hit the trail we often take. They have really cleared a lot of the brush out and now things I never knew about this spot are visible.
On thing is a ditch along the outside of the college football field. It is muddy & now filled with dead cat-tails & weed seeds. Marley & I have been butting heads as he thinks it's a hoot to run through it & when he does, it ends with me having to wash him as soon as we get home...
Well..... this was one of those times. When I seen him heading that way & called him, and he was having so much fun running that he didn't feel like listening..... and back he comes dripping with mud & loaded with seeds, branches, etc, Uggh!! (I think it was a bit cold this time.... he looked a bit uncomfortable.. LOL!)
I immediately put his leash on, told him him he was bad and grumbled all the way down the trail into the meadow.
I look up and see Tuesday in retriever mode... must be a squirrel. She LOVES to chase squirrels. and I let her as they quickly run up the trees.
I look over and she has her sites set on a giant skunk waddling across the meadow.
By this time I am screaming at her as she runs ahead some more & again is pointing at this skunk! I am now thinking that Marley's mud bath is nothing.... this is going to be an even bigger problem!!
Well, she decided to listen to mom & turned around and came back to me.....and of course I proceeded to tell her what a good dog she was!
We got home, Marley was so dirty I had to lather him twice, but that was okay.....could have been worse!!!
Sheesh....

Wow! Good for Tuesday! That would have been awful! Plus, I just read where skunks are nocturnal...and if they are out and about during the day (and if they show no fear of humans) they could be rabid!

Sounds like you have a great place for dogs!

Well..... I went to walk the dogs again today, and after taking what Jacque said in consideration, decided to walk the dogs to town.
It is a good 2 mile walk, and if I went the sissy way, I have to walk about 3/4 of a mile up the side of the hwy. with cars & trucks flying by at 60+ mph, before I can walk down a small country road that winds through a couple neighborhoods and eventually into town, and I can check my mail. I HATE walking along the side of the highway!!!!
So...... armed with my shotgun shell sized pepper spray, I decided to walk through the woods above the park in our neighborhood, a "shortcut" to the road off of the highway.
I have always walked this with my hubby, but he is out of town, besides, it's not that far...... just scary.
Mind you, it has been foggy since the sun rose, and here we are, walking through the woods, complete with crows cawing like something out of some horror show.
We make it out of the woods to a old road that used to lead to the city dump before it closed. It is closed off so it is not used, but we are out of the woods & the dogs are having a ball.
There was lots of what I think was coyote scat, all along this old road, them there was a huge pile of bear scat, uh oh! (there are bear AND Mt. Lions behind here but people only see them occasionally.) Little further down the road we start seeing animal bone scattered, then about a 2 foot section of back-bone, I am assuming a deer, intact but clean as a whistle.
Needless to say, I picked up my speed & got the heck out of there.
And then, with these little neighborhoods, you also have to be careful to navigate as to avoid the streets with aggressive dogs that might be loose.....
I sucked it up and walked down the side of the highway on the way home.... tons of traffic whizzing by. "sigh"
I think I will do the other trail again. I would much rather take on the skunk!

Oh, Geeze! I didn't mean to scare you!

Sounds like you had one wild time on your walk! I would have been scared too! LOL Glad it all worked out okay...highway traffic and all!
