I just found out that my doodle, Thomas Jefferson, has been diagnosed with Sebaceous Adenitis (SA). I have read online about the skin condition and was wondering if anyone has had a doodle with the condition or if anyone has found any treatments or remedies that they may suggest.
My Labradoodle has a had a rough 2 years of life. Age 1 Sept 08: Broke both front legs, received pins and plates in both legs Age 2 Aug 09: Surgery to remove pin from left leg. Age 2 Nov 09: Surgery to remove plate from left leg. Age 2 Nov 09: Diagnosed with SA. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. |

that s a tough one..the condition appears as a recessive gene in
poodles..it s sorta like exema in us.. your vet would know alot more about this condition, how to treat it and how to relieve any discomfort.. |

awww! I'm sorry to hear this. Poor thing. It sounds like he's had a rough go. I had never heard of this disease before. I read in several articles about feeding yogurt and keeping their skin well oiled. I hope you find a treatment that Thomas will respond well to. I will keep my eyes and ears open to see if anyone else has ever heard of this and if they have, what treatment was succesful. Ozzie joins me in wishing all the best to you and Thomas Jefferson. He's a beautiful dog!!!

Oh, I am so sorry that you and Thomas Jefferson (cute name!) are going through this...it is not going to be easy, but you can help him...
This link will help you understand the condition http://www.vipoodle.org/docs/undst_sa.htm Here is a small story of success, I think you need to see that this can be helped: http://www.astrolyka.com/illness.html And here is another: http://www.akita-friends.com/special/satreat.htm This is a sad thing to have happen and I feel so sorry for you and your beautiful dog...if you know who your breeder is, please let them know about the SA because both parents of your dog should be removed from breeding...it is essential that they not pass this along...and if they have used or sold puppies as breeding dogs, they need to make sure that those puppies are also removed from the program. The consequences are severe, but they need to do what is right to stop the progression of this disease. Please keep us posted about how things go for you...I wish you all the best. |

I will be meeting with a dermatologist next week to discuss some therapy options. From what I have read it seems to be the baby oil soaks and frequent baths will be the most likely treatment. But we will have to wait and see if they recommend anything else. It really confused my vet staff. I take him to a vet school hospital and they couldn't figure out what was wrong. So they started treating the secondary infection on his skin and thought it was due to maybe a skin sensitivity to a flea and tick topical solution because of the location. (It started on the top of his shoulders and moved back and down his body.) But with the skin punch they knew for sure it was SA. So hopefully soon we can begin treatment after he gets his staples and stitches out for his skin punch and the plate removal on his leg. I am definitely ready for him to be all doodly again.

I would also like to add that I encourage anyone who starts to experience hair loss without itching, severe dandruff or any of the symptoms of SA to have their dog tested. It saves lots of time, frustration and money by just doing the skin punch.

Very sorry to hear about Thomas Jefferson. I'm sure you'll find answers soon and he'll be back to his doodly self.
However, um by your avatar I'd like to say GO POKES!!! Sorry - I get all excited when I see fellow Oklahomans with Doodles (especially ones that are also poke fans! I think I have that same shirt...LOL). I don't see very many Doodle Mom and Dad's around here! I'm in the Tulsa area. |

There is another Doodle owner going through this...it has not been diagnosed as SA yet, but I did encourage them to get a skin punch test...it really is the quickest way. So often they try different treatments to "see" if it makes a difference when, if the skin is affected, a punch test is a quick answer.
Thanks so much for sharing this, you may help others by your experience....and so I do hope that you continue to post about treatment and outcome. Again, best to you and TJ! |

Well we will be taking Thomas in next monday to have his staples and cast removed from his leg and we will also be visiting with the Dr. in charge of the skin stuff. I am curious to what they will say and I am thinking about bringing the information on the baby oil soaks with me and see what they think.
And Thomas is a BIG OSU fan! We can't wait to stomp the Gooners this weekend. He has a jersey to wear on game days, so even with no hair he will look good. On another note. We have been considering adding another doodle to our family. Anyone recommend a breeder around here. We are looking for an Australian labradoodle full size. Thomas is an F1B but we are wanting to see if we can find one that is an Australian. Looking for a chocolate female with wooly coat. Thanks! |

Oh, my gosh, Charlie is so danged cute!!! These pictures just make me smile...what a doll baby!
Best wishes on the vet visit....I hope that they are able to help...in my book (I got it at the University of Missouri, Veterinary Medicne) they have pages of treatment for SA and since this book is intended for vets and it is a new edition, if you want I will pass along what they say. The book is called "Small Animal Dermatology, a Color Atlas and Therapeutic Guide"...it's pretty good. |

Both my guys are rescue-rehomes so I hadn't found any breeders in the immediate Oklahoma area. I'm sure you will get some great pointers on where to look through your PM though. I will say beware though and do your research and really consider who is recommended through this site. I have seen some labradoodle breeders in Oklahoma but they were very unreputable. A lot of rural area BYB's and PM's. And what a cute doodle you have, he looks gorgeous even without his OSU jersey on! And if you're taking him to the OSU Vet Hospital or whoever they recommend, I have heard GREAT things about that Vet Hospital, and really their entire animal-vet program! I am sure you'll get great advice and answers to your questions. |
