We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of "Purple" from Todd's litter. Thanks to the wonderful recommendation of Jac.
We are so excited for her to be a part of our family and I can't wait to surprise our kids! Anyone have any good recommendations on the following... I plan on reading this coming week some of patricia mccdonnell's books. Does any one have a favorite? Dog brushes... Is the le pooche brush all it is talked up to be? They have a 90 day trial and unconditional guarantee. Dog beds. What size do I get? Do you have any recommendations? Purple is on the smaller side she will be 17-19" tall. Any other ideas/recommendations I am all ears and ready to learn |

Congratulations! I have one of Todd's puppies from his last litter, he's 10 months old now. I have never needed a special brush for Beck, he has no undercoat, is quite curly and after I brush him I comb him. All of Patricia McConnells books are great, my favorite is 'the other end of the leash'. Some other resources that you might find useful are here: http://www.dogstardaily.com/free-downloads That is the download page where you will find 'before you get your puppy' and 'after you get your puppy' as well as some other free e-books, but go back to the main page and you will find plenty of good information there too.
As far as dog beds, I would get a large one, I am not sure how accurately you can gauge what size the puppy will be as an adult, Beck is about 24" and 65 pounds- larger than we anticipated but we don't mind- there is just more of him to love. I would suggest a large wire crate with a divider in it, as the puppy grows you can take the divider out. When Beck was not in the crate he was tethered to me, or to a table leg- it just made housebreaking a ton easier than it would have been if he had the run of the house.

Congratulations! I am very happy for you!
Ditto to all of Lynne's comments. The Other End of the Leash is excellent...large bed is preferable...wire crate...we cover ours with a sheet or blanket if the pup needs to settle down, but keep in mind the temp of the room. I have Les Pooch brushes, I think that they are okay but they do make the coat fuzzy...so after brushing, spritz a little water on the coat to get the curl back. I strongly recommend learning clicker training...so easy! Also, while she is young, use a halter in addition to the collar because they can pull out of the collar and get away, but not a halter. In fact, Todd, if you are reading this, I'd like to buy a halter for Red before he travels... |

What brush would you recommend? I am not sure what kind of coat she has.
I was thinking of starting her in the travel crate she comes in. Is that a bad idea? Should i just start with the wire crate right away? Jac, clicker training is exactly what we plan on using I just need to refresh my memory. Have any recommended sites? Kirama, thanks for your input. |

I would not use the travel crate...she will be so glad to get out of that! You will probably have much better luck starting her on a new crate.
I like the rake with spinning teeth...instead of brushes. Yes, I do have an excellent site for clicker training, Karen Pryor: http://www.clickertraining.com/ There are some free videos on that site. ...but I am going to be selling a fantastic clicker training program for puppies soon...The DVD that I will soon sell and that I highly recommend (it is so cute) is http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DTB758 |

Is the travel crate not a good idea Jac? If we get one big enough to ship the two if will be large enough for Purple for a month or two. I guess if the flight is not "fun" then she might not like it right away, but if you feed her meals in there it may change her ming about it.
I'll post a picture of Purple here for you all to see her, although I have a couple of very nice photo's that are not on the website that are very cute, I just dont have access to them right now to post. ![]()

Purple is sooo pretty!!!! When I saw one of her previous pictures Todd posted I thought she looked absolutely regal.
I'd like to add - I think it is SO great that some of your puppies are going to families right here on the forum! I can't wait to see how they grow up!! |

That was my reasoning, Lynne...not the frequent flyer miles, however! LOL
I just thought that if they connect the crate with the flight, they might get frightened and not like to be in it. I never use my travel crates again for the pups...I have no reason for avoiding them...just my belief that they would connect bad memories/scents to the travel crate. Little Purple is a sweetheart! So cute! |

you can drive yourself crazy reading thru all the post about how to treat and care for your new family member..
crate training was the easiest of them..we bought the second to the largest with a divider..at nights we covered it with a blanket and kept the tv on all night..and every two hrs i d take him out to potty whether he needed to or not.. after just a few day s..he d just go s back to the crate on his own when he got tired..and went outside whenever i said *potty*..the crate eventually became his place of solitude..we no longer use the crate...but, it was a great training tool.. |

JMO - but maybe a solution would be getting a large wire crate that you'll need anyway when Purple gets bigger and get one that has the divider to make it smaller just in case Purple really does HATE the travel crate when she gets home, you'll have a back up on hand. But yeah you can drive yourself crazy with all the info out there - BUT - you'll be fine. Just smush all the good advice together and you'll be one happy family! |

It's just like kids. You can read all the books in the world and hear everyone's advice but no child is going to fit the mold. You just take everything with a grain of salt and apply things as applicable for your personal puppy personality.

Congrats on getting "Purple"!! I just think she's adorable!!!
We borrowed a crate for Cinnamon the first 6-8 months or so, then we gave it back to our friend. She never did like it, never did go in it on her own accord. However, the crate was a house saver!! Good luck! |

You're so lucky! Little Miss Purple was my favorite in the pics Todd posted. She looks so petite, but very confident and proud of herself. I look forward to watching her grow up here on the forum. Congratulations!

I crate trained Mandy. At first she had the one I had here and while it was large enough when she was 11 lbs, she outgrew it quickly. I love the wire one with the divider. I think mine is the 42 inch one. She goes right in it at night when it is bedtime, but does not like going in it during the day (especially since she has been to work with me a few times now). I would recommend plenty of chew toys to keep "Purple" occupied, that saved us and our things during teething times. And of course a good poo scooper would be a good idea, LOL
Mandy's parents weigh in around 50 lbs and she is now almost 63 at 9 months.
