Default Bird Dog???

Sometime this past summer, a friend of ours, Ray, won a 5-bird pheasant hunt for a hunt club around Eagle Lake. Ray is not a hunter so he give the “prize” to my husband, Gene. Generally, we are all up at the lake for Thanksgiving so we thought it would be fun to have pheasant for Thanksgiving and have Ray and his wife and family over.

The owner of the club said if we didn’t have a dog, he would arrange for someone with a dog to go with Gene and to call his wife to schedule. Gene called the wife to schedule the hunt for the Monday before Thanksgiving. She asked if we had a dog and Gene explained that we have a Lab Poodle cross. She said the Lab in Dakota would probably love the hunt and suggested that Gene bring him!!!!! Hmmmmmm . . .

Soooo, as a test, Gene got his shotgun and we put Dakota on lead, walked into the sage adjacent to us and Gene fired 3 rounds. Dakota jumped back, startled from the sound—so did I!!—but he was pretty ok with it (he has been around a shooting range before).

So guess what????? Dakota will be going on his first hunt the Monday before Thanksgiving. We MAY have pheasant . . . I’m not sure how this works. If we are dependent on Dakota flushing and retrieving the birds, we may also be having chicken sandwiches for Thanksgiving!!! Dakota WILL be on a 100 foot lead and, although I would normally not go along as I’m not a huge fan of hunting, I WILL go along to make sure Dakota is ok!! Wish us luck!!!!

Guess what!!!!!! Next time we go to Eagle Lake, I get to go huntin’!!!! I’m not sure what this is but I GET ‘TA GO!!!!

A couple more “happy Dakota” pics from our trip to the lake last weekend . . .

And Dakota made a new friend!! This is Dakota teaching Ned to swim!! Ned is a rescue pup—1 year old. He is part Wire Haired Griffin, I believe, and part Lab. It looks a bit like he’s drowning!! Did I ever mention that Dakota has a dark sense of humor???

OMG! Diane! I always know that when I see a post from you I will be happy!! And this is no exception! My gosh, I love these pictures!
Now, thinking of Dakota hunting? Well, not so happy...I understand you wanting to go along!
Um, judging from the phesant I have had over the years (big hunt-crazed family) I think I'd plan on the sandwiches...there isn't much meat left after you get the feathers off and the buckshot out...ugh...

Diane love the last picture and from that caption and other stories you told, I think Dakota does have a dark sense of humor.

Good luck hunting. Maybe a frozen turkey in the fridge JUST IN CASE! LOL!
