I don't know if it is a coincidence or not, but all our problems started when Natural Balance changed their formula - All three dogs had runny stools for months until I figured out it was the food. I've gone through a few other foods to find that the other dogs are doing fine, but Maggie didn't get any better. We went to the vet, had a workup and checked for parasites and they found nothing wrong, so we determined the food still wasn't right. She's been on a bland/fasting diet for a month now with no getting better. Finally today, I came home to a mess in the crate (again) but this time (and this is a little gross, for those with a weak stomach) I couldn't tell which end it came out of. I brought her downstairs and she actually leaked diarrhea while walking down the stairs. I made it outside with her, hosed her and the crate tray off and then immediately called the vet. I brought her in at five and they're keeping her at the very least until tomorrow afternoon.
Please say a prayer for my sweet crazy girl Maggie. I miss her and the other dogs can't settle down without her.

Oh poor maggie. I hope the vet can figure it out. Did you try anything else besides changing food, like pumpkin? Dont hesitat eto ask your vet for a referal to another vet, maybe a gastrointestinal specialist if they know of one and they can't figure it our quickly. Dogs can get IBD (irritable bowl disease), so try to find a vet with some knowledge of that. Does magie like yoghurt? Maybe some probiotics will help. If she has had runny poops for months her normal intestinal flora must be all messed up too.

my vet told me that you can't always detect intestinal parasites, I forget all the details but some of them are in casings and aren't detectable. Beck was having runny poop and the vet gave it 2 weeks to clear up, and said if it didn't she was going to treat him for parasites despite the negative tests. Fortunately we found a food that he does well on and have had no problems since. We also augment his kibble with home cooked chicken or turkey with rice, oatmeal and vegetables. Now he's got nice firm poopies

Keeping Maggie and you in our prayers! I don't know if it is the same for dogs as people but I have an aunt that almost died because they could not find any parasites but she had them. Think about getting another opinion, you just might find a vet that knows what to look for. Hugs my friend.

We tried everything you suggested - and I do mean everything. The poor girl. My vets office has a team of specialists that already work there, so the GI doc is the one that was ordering the work ups and testing.
We didn't hear anything from them last night, and they said they'd call if they found anything, so I guess no news is good news? Hopefully she just needs to be rehydrated. Not that I wish Mags ill, but I wish they'd find something so we'd have answers and know what to fix. I'm off to classes for the day - I'll keep everyone updated. Kristin

Oh my goodness! you all are in our prayers
the only think i would suggest is that they do a giardia snap test, also when they do a fecal that the VET look at the slide not just the tech, it is absolutly correct that just because they dont see it does not mean it isnt there Call AnnMarie she can help!! |

Rest assured that Maggie and all of you are in my prayers.
How old is Maggie? Not that it matters..........but when Bogart was younger, he went through this as well. .......and we're still going through it as I speak. I know exactly how you feel. It's so hard when our babies are sick and we don't have the answers.

I spoke to the vet multiple times today... she isn't getting any better other than she's now a little more hydrated. We still have no answers. They're keeping her another night.
Annmarie I'll call when I get a chance - things are insane here. K

Oh, Kristen, I am so sorry to hear about Maggie! I had not read this yet and I am just so very sorry. I know how hard it is to have them at the vet and not know what is wrong...I pray that they will find an answer for you soon so that Maggie can start to feel better.
Have you, by any chance, been feeding the dehydrated chicken treats? I lost a puppy from the melamine poison in chicken tenders...there is a lot of info about that but I won't forward it in case you have not...but if you have, please let me know because I have a LOT of info! As the others have said, many times parasites can go unnoticed. Is her white count okay? Temp? Gosh, I am just so sorry. |
