So Linus was kinda down this afternoon - he knew daddy was going to the farm (any time husband puts on the coveralls Linus gets all excited because he usually gets to go, too) but today he had work to do so couldn't take Linus. Linus was so cute, sitting there, staring up at hubby, trying to be the best boy ever so that he could go along, but it just wasn't gonna happen. After hubby left, to cheer Linus up, I decided I would give him the special treat I'd been saving. A few weeks ago I'd bought a small bully stick. I'd never given Linus one before, this was the special day. As I was taking off the plastic, I got a whiff. PHEEEEEWWWWW!!! That had to be the nastiest thing I ever did smell! Well Linus also got a whiff, and was in immediate doggie rapture. I finished unwrapping it and handed it to him (with two fingers only - I wasn't gonna let it touch me any more than was necessary...) He lay on the kitchen floor and ate the whole thing, while I washed the dishes and gagged at the stink (and I've even got a bit of a head cold so my olfactories aren't at their keenest right now - good thing!) He had the thing polished off within half an hour, then proceeded to roll around on the floor where he'd eaten it. Never again will I buy one of those vile things! Special "treats that were once parts of other animals" will now be limited to pig ears, which smell like the cracklins I enjoyed as a kid; and deer antlers, which have no odor and will last several weeks. I don't know how those of you that give bully sticks on a regular basis can stand it!

Believe me, you guys, this thing made the livestock barn at the county fair smell like a flower shop in comparison! And I'm a yearly visitor of said county fair livestock barn, so I know. I knew in advance what they are made of, but never dreamed they would be so stinkin, well, stinky!!!

There are 2 types of bully sticks. some smell really bad, as you have experienced, others not at all. I usually buy the ones that are unwrapped in baskets at our pet store, the ones that tend to be wrapped up, are wrapped for a reason
Remy loves his non-smelly bully stick as much as he loves the smelly ones, I bought a smelly one by mistake.

Yes they do have a smell all their own!!! I have not found the "unscented" version and I go buy bullies for Dakota because they are a safe and healthy treat vs rawhides which he really prefers. Luckily, he chews his bully stick only occasionally!!!

I always buy them 6-8 at a time.... sometimes wrapped, sometimes not. This last batch we had one that smelled. My son kept asking what smelled so bad. He said it smelled like "death". We narrowed it down to a bully stick. Part of then were wrapped, the rest not. I do not remember if the stinky one was wrapped or not.
This was only one in a batch of 6 so....???? Next time I will be sure to grab unwrapped if given a choice! |

I agree, they are wrapped for a reason. I have bought both and the unwrapped are much better. I wouldn't say they are odorless but much better. I even sniff them in the store before I buy them..
Sadie loves them and will chew on it for hours at a time. If the weather is bad and she can't go out and is driving me nuts to keep her busy, I'll give her one. I usually get the 9 inch long ones and usually it will last for a few days.
