Default Peanut chases deer just misses being hit by car

OK.....i am posting this so OTHERS can be aware that even 2yr old dogs will have their moments and still go thru stages.
also why I never raise my voice with my dogs and save it for emergencies ONLY.

one night last week i was asleep and dave took Max/Peanut out for late nite quick potty walk at side of house
we're 100ft from a road 35pmh speed limit but people do more like 55mph
deer right at garage Peanut bolts runs across street AFTER deer, Dave gets her immediately, she's fine...Max listend and stayed in yard

LAST NIGHT: i go out at 9pm and a deer jumps out from behind the bush stares at us, PEANUT and MAX BOLT
a car is 150ft away i hear it see it's lights .......i SCREAM NO MAX NO PEANUT as LOUD as i could several times quickly
peanut stopped right at the edge of road as car went whizzing past...Max stood like a statue

OKAY.......even max at 2.5yrs old has moments when i see a "stage" goes back on leash and gets MORE refresher training
PEANUT is getting it majorally since last week and NOW OFFICIALLY on leash unless we are in the back

6am this morning put Peanut ON LEASH.....guess who greets us 30ft from front door? YUP MR JUVENILE white tail DEER
he's eating the Yews (evergreens) in my driveway.....PEANUT DIDN'T BOLT as she was ON Leash and this was a good way to do
training as this was a re-enactment.

1. Please i know of people losing 6yr old dogs to roads.....if your dog is having a stage of not listening or entering doorways or doors
before you do........go back to alpha/respect training 101 as we've been it doesn't happen overnight and 2yr old dogs push buttons at times

2. the FEW TIMES i've screamed NOooooooooo like last night they LISTEN almost immediately cause it's foreign to them
and i am SURE they hear the FEAR/DANGER in my voice. so it works for emergencies but who wants to test that one out?

3. Even this morning with peanut on leash i am shaking inside as peanut stopped just barely 2ft before the car went by last night
and this morning i was SMART not taking any chances and who would have thunk possibly same deer was in same spot again staring us down
then bolting.

4. my son's friend almost hit a deer in my driveway last night too

So for those in cold wintery areas known to have deer....it's a reminder they love evergreens, baltic ivy, etc to eat esp/when it's been this cold
and food is scarce. DOGS LOVE TO CHASE it's instinctual also here i thought Peanut and Max were well trained out back but they'll run
400 ft and stop watching deer run last 500ft and dissappear into woods not following them.

soooooooo back to whistle/treat training as they do for hunting dogs..........on leash for a week or more for Peanut
more OB training one on one and also simultaneously with Max inside and outside the house.
AND like i always tell DAVE and my son, BRING the frisbee or flying squirrel with you at all times at they focus much attention on it
even ignoring the deer when you do. I had broken my own rule due to being tired and wanting to hurry up.

PLEASE learn from me

Wow, that was scary!

Cinnamon went through a no listening stage just last week. With her though, if I put her on her off leash commands, she listens better. I guess when you're 3 1/2 yrs old, you know whats coming next!

We live next to a 55mph zone, where they do more like 65. There is no way a car would be able to stop if Cin ran out in front of them. I have a limit spot for her where she is required to stop, and she knows her limit. Last week she wanted to test that limit. Didn't work, Mom caught her. We have deer out here too, but because of the sparse trees, I can spot them a ways off. They're usually off in the trees by the lake, and that's parallel to the road back 300ft or so, so that's a good thing. I'm glad we have some of the yard fenced off, so I can let Cin out without having to watch her so close. At least in the morning when I'm still in jammies!

Phew!! Close call.

Sound reminder and advice Annmarie. We live in the city so it is rare, very rare that Marley is not leashed. Regardless of how old or well trained your dog is, there is always the chance that something will catch its interest to the point where he or she will bolt. In my opinion, I see no reason to risk it, not to mention the fact that it is a $150 fine if your dog is not leashed and you are caught. Some find the laws restrictive and unneeded, but I think they are for the safety of everyone..... the dog, kids, other dogs and even the owners. I always have a running argument that I have with a person I know, who insists on walking his dog without a leash in the city. "He would never run off" and ya know that is probably true, but that on rare occassion, it could be the only and last time that he does it. Cannot justify the risk. Off leash is what dog parks and back yards are for, in my opinion.

As i was reading I got really worried what the end of the story was. But I am glad everyone is ok. I have had to go back to some refresher for the doodles. It is a good thing to do.

Thanks for sharing. We don't have deers but Cacao will go after other dogs if she is off leash. Beau is really good at stopping when I call his name.

Yikes! That was scary Annmarie! I'm so relieved Peanut stopped. Thanks for the reminder that it's wise to keep up with the training.

You must have been scared to death- I know I would have been! Thank goodness she is alright, and your training has paid off!
Jim always teases me about keeping Tyke on a leash all the time, but unless she is in our fenced in backyard, that leash stays ON! At a year and a half, no way am I trusting her, and like you said, with the right distraction, a 6 year old dog can run into trouble very quickly! We have deer running through our neigborhood all the time, and I can easily see Tyke taking out after one!

That is a very close call. I am so relieved it turned out OK. I know mine would chase a deer, rabbit, squirrel, leaf, into the road so they never get the opportunity. Car-dog accident can happen in the country, it is not just a city danger. My father in law last his lab last summer at only 2 yrs old living in the middle of knowwhere. He would have to fence his yard to get one of our pupples. Thanks for bringing up an important reminder about safety. Its a lesson nobody wants to learn the hard way. Give your doods a hug for me.

Thanks for the post on safety! I really appreciate these reminders. They get me thinking of things we need to pay more attention too. No deer in our area but tons of speeding cars. Our neighbors have kids that hang out with suspected gang members and they often speed like crazy down our street. We have tons of kids around too, so I am not the only one that says a few choice words when those kids get in their cars. When we moved here and sold our home in CA we fenced the front yard with a locking gate. However that did not help much when I got too secure with our dogs and thought I had closed the gate tightly but had not. Buddy got out and it was probably 10 min. before Kevin noticed Buddy was gone. What saved us and Buddy I am sure is he took a long time to explore and never made it to the Very Very busy street just outside of our housing complex. I also had learned a thing called puppy party. I acted like a nut calling Buddy like crazy. I sounded like I had the best treat in the world and sure enough he was running so hard his belly almost got road rash! This was a huge difference than when we first got him and he thought it was huge fun to evade us.

Anyway You have made me think that Kevin and I really must teach our dogs to stop the very min. we tell them to. Calling them to us isn't always the right thing if they have already crossed a busy street. If we can get them to sit and stay while we make it to them they are safer in that instance. I know that wasn't the case here but you helped me remember I must work on that too. I think we must save our money and take the next obedience level since we only know the beginning level.

I am so glad everything turned out ok. Thanks for the reminder.

Oh Anne Marie! How terrifying! I am soooo glad that they listened! I had a slightly similar experience with Hagrid and he also listened. I also yelled (which I don't usually do either) and he responded to the anxiety in my voice... but it really does turn your insides into jello.

Very scary .......................but glad you posted as it is very important.
I too do not care how old or how well you think your dog is trained all it needs is one moment in
time to do the wrong thing at the wrong time............
Denver is excellent off leash and his recall is amazing yet I never walk him without a leash until we
get to the enclosed areas that we go to................as I do not know what new experience we may encounter and therefore do
not know what his reaction will be, like to think that no matter what he will listen and he probably would but I am not going to take that
chance with my Denver............Thanks again for posting Annmarie and very happy to hear that both dogs are well...........

A good refresher lesson for all of us. We can never really believe that our doods are 100% in our control. They have their instincts and instincts take over the best trained dog. Glad to know that all are safe at your house and thanks for the reminder....
