The GL is designed to solve a problem (pulling). It is what they call a 'specialty' collar. The AKC rules prohibit using the GL during the test. Abby was was the same pulling dog and the GL solved the problem, however Obedience means just that (not OB by device, but OB by behavior) otherwise it's force training!!!! Renee had a little trouble converting to the standard collar after using the GL and it took her awhile to TRAIN HERSELF to use the Martingale. Once she passed the test she put the GL back on. So I suggest that the sooner you train with the Martingale the better. It's a learning curve for both the dog and handler. If you are not competing or certifiying your dog for CGC or PAT (Public Access Test) and you are happy with the GL then by all means use it

Thanks! I was afraid that you were going to say that there was something terrible about the GL and we shouldn't be using them. Whew!

For right now, I use the GL, as I said, when going to stores or parks or such so that I never have a pulling/control problem. At home, we do work on training with the martingale. In fact, I never put the GL on at home. I do have a problem with the martingale slipping down her neck while she is walking nicely (on a loose lead). I can reposition it where it belongs but then when she isn't pulling on it, it just slips down. Then the next time she pulls, it isn't very effective since it's not sitting properly. I guess we need to work on this some more. I'd love for her to eventually walk in a regular buckle collar (or am I just dreaming the impossible?). I would love to get her to the point of obtaining her CGC.

Yeah we're in a rough position right now. Dex seems to hate the martingdale and I don't think we can overcome by next week's class (he was seriously freaked). He was 100% great in class besides the portion when he was afraid. He is so socialized - we have taken him a million places, but always on the GL.

We have to go pick up our vacuum at Best Buy tomorrow which is right next to Petsmart so I"m going to try doing some training on his normal flat collar in the store to see how that goes. If he can behave ok on his normal collar for the class that is fine with me. I just don't know how well the loose leash walking on a flat collar will work - we'll see
