After a great trip to Florida over Christmas (I still have to post pictures) and a great New Year we had a really rough week this week. Mark was out front clearing our driveway of snow and I opened the front door to tell him dinner was ready. In that short time, Sadie managed to squeeze past me and run out the front door. For the second time in a week she ran down our busy street and darted across traffic several times. We were lucky last time, but not as much this time. The cars slammed on their brakes, but unfortunately one managed to clip her back hip as it slid to a stop in the snow. Sadie jumped back up and ran over to Mark. There was no obvious injuries, but she definitely didn't seem to want to move around much once we got her back inside.
We found a 24 hour animal hospital and after a very teary (on my part) drive we were able to get her checked out by a vet and get her x-rayed. We are amazingly lucky that she had no internal injuries and no broken bones. We took her to her usual vet the next day and Sadie got another clean bill of health. We did notice that her urine was darker than normal and she was peeing a lot more than normal so we went back to the vet again yesterday. She was diagnosed with an urinary tract infection and now has antibiotics. They think the impact may have caused some blood to get into her bladder. Sadie is still slow to lay down and to get back up. Her hips are a bit sore. But we are so fortunate that she was not injured or killed. Needless to say we are working on the emergency recall command again, (yelling come now! and giving treats for 30 straight seconds once a day) and are making sure Sadie does not go through a door without us saying "ok" first even when she has a leash on. We really didn't realize just how attached we are to our 7 month old puppy until we were scared she was going to be taken from us. I've never been so scared and felt so guilty in my life. We are so lucky!

I am so happy she is ok!!!!!!!!!!!
That is a huge fear for all of us, and I am currently teaching Ryder just like I taught Denver that he is not allowed to go out the door unless I go first.............he is starting to get it and so will yours. Big hugs to your baby from us........ |

I am so glad she will be ok! I am thankful you were lucky and blessed that she wasn't seriously hurt or worse! We have to practice the sit stay at the door more! We have been a bit inconsistent with that lately. Thanks for reminding me we must try harder! Our trainer taught us what she called a "puppy party" that has worked as our emergency call back. Basically you make it sound like it is the best thing in the world to come to you and treat when they come. I can see now however, that we need to teach them to sit and stay where ever they are too. Our prayers are with you that she will be 100% quickly!

So Happy to hear Sadie will be OK - we too are continuing to work on sit & wait while I open the door - It's a pain in the neck sometimes - but I have a fear of Hamish bolting (a bad habit our old rescue lab had and we never able to fully break) - Hopefully she'll be feeling better soon and a little more leery of those giant metal things with wheels. Keep us posted on her progress!!!

ohhhh my heart sank when i saw the title but was sooooooo happy to hear SADIE is OKAY!!!
i cannot imagine the worry/fear/anguish when it happened and also how lucky you felt she's not hurt ((((((((((for SADIE and you))))))))))))))))) and thanks for a good reminder to us all about roads. i am counting the days till i can afford fencing thus walk my doodles out back with a frisbee or flying squirrel in hand at all times to keep their attention on me ON and off though Max/Peanut both have had times where they are back on leash for anywhere from a week to once 2mos till they trained again and were out of various stages of wandering and selective hearing.

Glad she is ok! Perhaps you can teach her that an open door means sit and wait. I would also train her to the whistle recall. Sorry you had to experience that.

wow I'm so happy she's ok - I'm glad you mentioned the outcome in the title of this!!
I'm sure you don't need to be told this, but make sure to work on training for the door. It's possible this incident will deter from doing it again. I work on it with the door between our house and the garage. I will give the wait command and not let them go through the door until I say ok. That way I can fully train w/o worrying they could get in trouble if they don't obey. Kirby scared the crap out of me by going out the front door to greet the UPS guy one day...something Dex would never do. Give your doodle a big hug from me.

The nightmare we all dread. I'm glad your girl is almost none the worse for her experience, although her owners are clearly both shaken and stirred.
From the time my pups arrived I've insisted that they "wait" at doors. I don't make them sit because that takes too long when a dog is about to dart through. I just say, "wait" and hold up the palm of my hand in front of them at the entrance both for going out and coming in. I also make them wait in the car until I say they can get out. Sometimes I leave the house door open and tell them they must wait either out or inside. Each time they go to cross the threshold I say, "no wait". They are great at it now and I can open the back of my stationwagon in car parks to put in my shopping without any fear of them leaping out and going under a car.

So happy that Sadie is doing well. Got an empty feeling in my stomach when I read what all of us dread. Lots of love and healing licks sent your way. Take it slow and get all the pampering you deserve.

Big hugs for Sadie! So glad to hear she is okay!
We had a near miss with Rusty a few weeks back. Our garage has a door at the front as well as the back and I am naughty and forget to close the back garage door Graeme came home and opened the front of the garage with the remote, which Rusty heard and went bounding off to see Dad! Luckily Graeme saw Rusty and stopped the car! All those weeks of dog training went out the door......... Rusty was in 'Dad's home' mode and wasn't going to stop for no one! Needless to say the back garage door is never left open any more!!
