Cinnamon is part of the "No Carrot Party." She's perfectly content to watch others eat them, just don't give them to her!

A vet suggested I give raw carrots to Nicky to chew on when he was a puppy, but Nicky rejected them immediately. He won't chew them at all! He loves frozen peas, fresh apple tidbits, and a bite or two of banana. These are treats, given when I'm preparing my own food, and I don't consider them a regular or significant part of his diet.

When my sister's dog was overweight her vet suggested feeding the dog green beans while cutting back on the dog's regular food. The dog liked green beans and they filled her up without adding lots of calories.

Tia loves green beans but I ran out. I am going to the store and buying a ton because we like them too. She hates apples though! I wanted to treat her to them and it was like I was punishing her! If it were not for the weight problem I would not worry so much since I think her regular food has good nutrition. I did get her dogie treats from the store since they are less fattening than what I was giving her at night when I read. That is working well. I started doing these things before I took T to the vet and she had lost 2 lbs. so I know it is working. She has 8 lbs. left to loose so these suggestions are good for me to know. I don't want her hungry so she gets things like green beans! You all are helping me thank you.

OK i have read and been told raw carrots aren't easily digestible for dogs so either Blanching them ( put in boiling water for say 2 minutes or so)
or cooking them is easier and then dogs won't spit them out.

raw carrots ...well max and peanut have upchucked them once , i took the hint hhaaaaaaaaa and also took my vet's advice.

walking or playing fetch is also a good way of helping your dog to lose weight....peanut in past once had to lose 10lbs
i carefully measure her food amounts, tossed her toys across the room when we weren't outside, also NO treats rather gave her bones
(uncooked marrow bones are good), sometimes some sweet potato , small amount of oatmeal, small amount of plain yogurt (were her
only treats).

Losing 1 lb a week is good rate and after a while it may only be 1/2 to 3/4 lb a week weight loss.....that's okay as it is healthy that way.
peanut i have to always make sure no one in this house feeds her for me or gives her extra treats as she can easily womp on weight
I do make sure she gets LOTS of exercise outside tossing snowballs low to ground, toss flying squirrel etc

Good luck as we went thru this over a year ago

Are you saying it's bad to feed raw veggies to a dog who likes them? I don't know maybe I am understanding you wrong. It's ok if you feel that way - I just want to understand your post and you may have been talking about something else.

To each their own - I don't agree w/all the RAW meat feeding, but everyone is entitled to their own opinon.
Leslie, I'm reacting to Kathy being given the advice of feeding dogs carrots then she has negative reaction and people now say they should be cooked blanched whatever to justify it. Instead of using the internet to spread nonsense we should be using it to get the facts. DOGS DO NOT DIGEST VEGGIES WITHOUT PUTTING THE VEGGIES INTO A FOOD PROCESSOR! I am all for personal freedom, PLEASE FEED WHATEVER YOU WANT...For your dogs sake do the research!

Raw carrots are considered a delicacy here. My doodles have a baby carrot or two every day. I realize they are not digested and I consider if "fiber" for their system. They also eat pieces of sticks and other assorted non-digestables.

Ditto.
Mija loves them and I am WILLING to oblige her on that one...
not to say that she gets EVERYTHING she wants....even if she tries.

p.s. I've used the cooked green bean method on past chubby dogs---works like a charm and they loved them. All lived long, healthy, happy lives.

p.s.s. Hey MTD---I'm having trouble remembering, are you FOR the RAW diet or what???!!! (just kidding! )
Naw I'm switching to Alpo and brocolli

That might be hard since we eat off the same towel.
