Default Ham bone

Can a dog have a ham bone after you cook it? I am making split pea soup with the left over ham and the bone. I wondered if after I flavor the soup is the bone too soft then or is there any problem with letting the dogs have it?

RAW BONES are good even ham bones BUT COOKED BONES a big NO-NO as they are softened up by cooking and can easily splinter as well as
break off in pieces that can be harmful to a dog's mouth, cause choking and also hurt intestines-stomach.

marrow bones at supermarkets or marrow shanks are great!! I give mine one a week usually, they love them.
Peanut takes 10 to 15min then realizes it's value hahhaaaaaaaaa Max he doesn't waste one second, he dives right in.

OH i've found that chewing on raw bones not only wears them out literally but they do need to go potty after awhile.

I really appreciate your quick reply! I was not going to give a bone to them until I heard from someone. I haven't cooked the bone yet so maybe I will just use the ham and not the bone. So the little bit of ham left on the bone doesn't hurt them? I did not know if the smoked ham was ok or not. Thanks again!

Also Kathy....I bought 4 ham bones from a local feed and grain store (Agway)..they were in the dog food section..many different bones to 'chews' from.. but after 15-20 mins. both Raleigh and Molly had them broken and splintered to the point of them being so sharp they really could have hurt themselves if swallowed...so out they went along with the two others that were in the bag... ..better to stick to Annmarie's advice!

Well...wait a minute...isn't ham cooked (cured)??? Does that affect the bone? I would think so...I wouldn't give it...only raw meat bones.

We had a honey baked ham Christmas eve and I'm sorry to have to throw out that nice looking juicy bone! <sigh>

On the plus side, Wayne and Charlie ate part of a dead rabbit this morning so they've had their "raw" for the day. I could not pull them away fast enough! Charlie threw up his part an hour later.

I think I am going to cook with the bone bu not give it to the dogs just to be safe. We can't afford to have any problems! Thank you all for the information! I was wondering if being cured like ham is if it changed the bone too.
