Default Martingale Collar

Does anyone know of a good website to buy Martingdale Collars from? I found a few stores on ebay but thought I would ask for recommendations.

I think I'm going to take a CGC class with Dex and you can't use the Gentle Leader there...I think he may need a little more than a normal collar to keep him in line

www.earthdog.com has some really cool ones. They make the ones I got for Pringle and Finn. Very soft hemp.

www.sitstay.com has them. If you buy Premier Brand they are guaranteed for life. They even replace them if they are chewed!

I'm curious, is the martingale collar good for a dog with a fat neck, who can shrug off a traditional collar, yet needs control for walks? My non-doodle is a chow-husky-golden mix, 100lb of pure dog, and she shrugs out of the gentle leader. We've used a prong collar, but I'm looking for something more humane, yet still effective. She's a runner, so I currently have her in a harness, but it doesn't help much for leash walking.

They come in all sizes. Abby has the 3/4" webbing I believe it comes in 1" for bruisers It's nothing but a choke collar with limits to the amount of 'choke' you use. I use a very loose choke so Abby does not cough if she pulls (which she does not do anymore). If you adjust it too tight it has the same effect as a choke chain albeit with less damage to the dog. Another way to deal with a pulling dog is to teach it to walk behind you.

Hi Leslie,
I got Vegas a Martingale collar from:
http://www.petexpectations.com/lupinecurrent.html

I also got his tags from her. Its a small operation and the owner (Jill Anderson) communicates directly with you. I like the Lupine leads and collars. They are guaranteed for life.

I looked at these collars and I was happy to see the warning that they are not meant to be left on when unattended. We had something like this for a while and did not know this. Tia plays with Buddy by grabbing his collar and somehow she got twisted in it and she could not get loose. The fear and struggle was awful. Luckily she was small and my husband was there. He flipped her around and she came loose. We threw out the collars and got the kind that snap closed and open. She got stuck on one of those and we just snapped it open. Now she knows better but she could have broken her jaw. If I had known not to leave it on unattended I would have been saved so much fear and possible hurt and heartache! I have to say that for walking I like them though.

thank you all for the recommendations. I ordered one - should get it soon. My only goal with it is to use it for a training class. I wouldn't leave it on him all the time.

Martingale collars are slip collars and some are flat, some are chain and some are prong. When you use these types of collars, it is good to know how to properly fit them and use them...the Leeburg Kennels sell them and also have a lot of good info on fitting and use: http://leerburg.com/collars.htm

Ok so I got Dex's new training collar in the mail. It doesn't have a normal clasp so I assume I need fit it and then put it over his head? How tight should it be? I really only plan to use this for the class and maybe for some walks around the neighborhood.

It's very cute by the way!! He'll be a stylish dood in training

Leslie, what type did you get? The prong collar (for me) is hard to hook...you have to pinch the prongs so that they fit into the other side...I don't know how to explain it...but if it isn't a prong collar it might be different...

Let's see if a photo will work. I think I need to slip it over his head and then adjust it on him...but I'm not totally sure...

see all the way to the bottom of the page...

We have used a Martindale collar from time to time on Tanner...it is a quick way to take him out for a quick pee. However, I have found that when I used it for a regular walk say of a mile or so, he would really pull. I found that the "Gentle Harness" still works best for walks.

Leslie, it does indeed slip over his head. You adjust it so that it is snug enough to not slip over his head when the smaller loop is pulled closed. It will look quite loose when it is not pulled closed. Notice how loose Pringle's looks in these pics. If I were using it for training or walks I would probably make it a half inch or so tighter. The leash attaches to the D ring and tags should be attached to one of the other loops.
