Default Pedi Paws? (and a story)

Just curious if anyone has tried pedipaws? It is an electric way to dremel the nails?

In case you are wondering, there is a story behind why I'm asking...

We took Kirby to Petsmart today for a nail trim. I went to pay and left Kirby with my husband. They didn't have Kirby in their system (no shot records) and said they could only trim him if we would put a muzzle on him...we said sure (I understand their policy). I come back to not a good scene. I guess the one girl who was cutting him cut his nail too close and he was bleeding a bit and poor Kirby was totally freaked out! My husband was not a happy camper...I guess the girl was terrible with him and just kept going at him with the clippers instead of trying to take some time to let him recover! I think it was good the muzzle was on Kirby...he kinda went after the first girl in a way I've never seen him do before!! She definitely freaked him badly.

So the lady who grooms Dex saw this and ran over to help out. She is very nice and sat with Kirby to calm him and finally was able to finish cutting his nails. Anyway, all his nails were cut, but after our bad experience I think I'd rather just do his nails ourselves. I'd rather try a tool that can't cut him...it's difficult to see where his nails end.

I think Kirby is over the situation...the groomer took the muzzle off him and he was totally happy and fine so hopefully he won't remember this.

So sorry you and Kirby had to go through that. I've had good and bad experiences at Petsmart. The only thing they are consistent with us inconsistency!! I didn't like the dremel trimmers at all. they were cumbersome for me, and the kids didn't like them at all!

I use a dremel on Finn and he doesn't seem to mind. I do have to use it frequently to keep them trimmed short though. Periodically I make a trip to the groomer for a trim and then try to keep up from there. If you do a google search you can find a good article by dober dawn regarding how to dremel your dogs nails.

Ask your Vet tech to show you how to do it!!! Buy the clippers they're cheap! Dremel training takes a while to accomplish.

I use a dremel on Denver as he will not let you cut his nails any other way........
but even with a dremel hubby has to hold him.............

I think you're right. We do have clippers and have used them...we'll just be careful and only clip a tiny bit at a time.

Kirby just started to make progress with the noise of the hair clippers...I don't think a dremel would go over too well with him...

So sorry to hear about the trauma that Kirby had to experience. You wonder, why would someone be a GROOMER if he or she cannot be patient when working with dogs?

Anyway, I can relate to the nail clipping problem--Stella's are jet black, so impossible to tell how much to trim. I just bought the regular clippers (my set came with a little tube of styptic powder that stores in the handle), and we are taking it slowly and just doing as much as she can handle before getting skittish. So far this week we have made it through both front feet! Small success, I guess. By the time I finish her back feet, her fronts will be long again.

ohh so sorry to hear KIRBY went thru an experience like that

there are nail clippers you can buy that use batteries to tell you RED LIGHT ORANGE LIGHT and GREEN LIGHT
meaning you put nail in making sure it rests in circle and as you move nail in more light will change color to tell you when
it's safe to clip.
NOW they're $29 at expensive pet shop so i am sure they're probably $19 to $21 elsewhere.....i'll get the name of them if you want Leslie
as I myself Debate on buying them

So sorry to hear about Kirby! I bought the clippers with a guard that won't let you clip more than a little bit and then I treat Cali liberally with liver treats after each clip. Fortunately I haven't clipped too short yet!

I was afraid of cutting Napa's nails, so I bought that Green Yellow Red cutter. The blade dulled really fast, and I don't like the clipping motion it needs to cut the nail. I like the left to right cut, instead of the up and down cut. Also, the light is very inconsistant. I don't feel like they helped me get over my fear of cutting nails! I still make Napa bleed every so often. It's usually one of the first nails, then I back off. I think I'll ask the holistic vet I plan on starting to take Napa to to help me! But that'll be after I get back from being at home!

I have a dremel tool, Cordless black and decker with dremel attachments. I've used it a bit , but Remy doesn't really like it at all. I have used the guillotine style and don't like them too much.
I have the Scissor style too.

I think what I really could use is a real hands on Lesson. Maybe a few lessons, so that I would feel more comfortable doing them. My vet always does them "out back" and I wish he would do them in the exam room.

I wonder what the level of interest would be of having a monthly teaching clinic, where we would bring our dogs for nail trims and learn how to do them correctly.

Those who are uncomfortable doing this could stop by and have them done regularly and those who want to learn could go until they felt comfortable.

What do you think, Would you go to something like this? Maybe PetSmart would start something like this?

Good idea! I do have to trim Buddy's every so often.

Peticure user here (different brand). I can't do the other kind. Jazz is used to it, but you do have to work them up to it. She'll stay still if she gets treats.

Poor Kirby - Annabelle sends smoochies

D bought one of the pedi paws (when he was out shopping alone ) Anyhow, he used it today, said Annabelle just stood there and let him do her nails, not fighting - he ground them down just a little - they are very smooth, no rough edges, this is the pup who HATES having her nails trimmed, so I guess for her it is a winner

This thread is making me a bit crazy. I've never cut my dog's nails. Charlie gets groomed regularly so his get done at the groomers. Wayne's nails don't seem too long. He does walk on cement regularly. Is that enough to keep them short? I'm willing to bet he's never had his nails trimmed and he is just now 1 year old.
