Ok I have heard about sprains and such but this time it is my T T. We did not see the ice on our front porch and T was doing a doodle 500. She hit the ice and did a back end split and now is limping. Nothing is broken and she is already acting better but Mama is worried. How long does it take to heal?

Ouch! It depends what actually may have been injured and how bad. when Dakota did whatever he did to his back leg (the vet offered nothing conclusive except to diagnose the wrong leg), it took him 2 full months to completely recover. But I think he had a very bad muscle pull or some kind of a sprain.

If you have a natural/herb store near you I would get some Arnica Montana (30C) asap. It will help her heal faster and prevent any pain. Either crush it and put it in some water OR put it on her gums under her lip to let it get absorbed faster than going into her tummy.
I hope T feels better soon! Sarah

so sorry to hear this as many of us and our dogs have gone flying on ice
I'd keep an eye on her for a few days to see if limping improves and/or seems to not put weight on it after a day or two. I know with previous dogs injuries usually lowactivity and rest is advised for 7 to 10days BUT I am NOT a vet so if Tuffy seems to be in pain after tomorrow i'd suggest a call to the vet for advice. Please keep us posted

You all are helping so much. Tia isn't limping as much but I am keeping an eye on her. If dogs are at all like people she may hurt more tomorrow. She hit the cement hard and slid a couple of feet or so. If I had not been so worried about her being hurt I could have laughed, but the laugh went away quickly when she was limping. I appreciate you all so much! |

Cinnamon took a dive when we had an ice storm a couple of years ago. She limped a little but the big thing was she didn't want to jump on Dad's lap to give him "kisses." We just let her rest for a couple of weeks, we went to her for a while. When she was feeling better she let us know by jumping on us. I'm sure she wouldn't have done this if she was still in a lot of pain.
She sprained her knee once while playing fetch with Dad on the stairs. We don't do that anymore either. That was a good way to tire her out though! |

LIke everyone else, I would advise caution and rest. And possibly a visit to the vet to be sure what you're dealing with. My grandpuppy, Abby, a chocolate lab had a slip and fall and ended up with a strained and possibly torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament. That is a serious injury but all Abby displayed was limping. She has been on strict rest - no running or jumping - for a month now and will have to go back to the vet to see if she had healed enough. If not then she may be a candidate for surgery.
So to be safe I would limit Tia's activity and if she continues to limp get her into your vet. It is so worrisome when they can't tell us exactly where or why they hurt. Give her lots of love and quiet times. Hope she is on the mend soon. |

Best thing you can do is a glass of wine...FOR YOU! It's not unlike a kid skinning a knee or twisting an ankle for which rest is the cure. You can also give 1/2 baby aspirin for pain. Puppies will be puppies!

Tia and momma doing better. She isn't limping but when I brush her she is a little watchful when I get near her leg. No yelping or signs of constant pain, but I am keeping her quiet. You all are so supportive. Thanks.

I would keep a close eye on her. If this happened to me right now, I would be off to the vets to see if an xray was indicated.
But that is due to my current situation with little Remy. I would continue to watch for any signs of a more tramic injury or worsing of pain. I hope that it is just a sprain or a bad bruise and that Tia will be doodling around again in no time.

Glad to hear that Tia is feeling a little better today. I agree with the *keeping her quiet* suggestions. If she did stain something, it'll need some time to heal before being stressed again with exercise. If it gets worse though, you probably should consult your vet, just to be certain of what you're dealing with.
Feel better Tia. |
