Hagrid just has the "frito feet".. though I had been calling it warm, nutty feet before you all coined the term. He doesn't smell at all otherwise. I'd check the ears first, as recommended by so many other doodlers, then maybe take him to the vet just in case :P

You know, I was thinking about this...and I can say that my dogs will get a metallic smell when they are on certain meds, such as antibiotics or when they have been to the vet for surgery. Are you giving any vitamins that might cause the scent?

I give him oil capsules for his omegas (to see if it helps his coat) and a garlic capsule...but my other dogs get the same and just smell 'doggy'. The smell isn't constant, either, seems to come and go. I'll get the vet nurse to have a sniff when I take him in to visit. Interesting all the comments about the smelly feet...that's one bit I've never noticed smelling!

As to the "metallic smell"....I am surprised that no one has mentioned a full anal gland that has started to leak.
Having worked in a grooming shop, I have noticed they can take on quite different smells. The smell is affected by what you feed them. A few that I have smelled have been what you could call a "metallic smell". |

How do you know if it needs emptying? He's not dragging his bum on the ground...no signs of discomfort there. Anal glands is one thing I've never explored too closely

Wayne has fear issues and when he is afraid, he gives off a strong doggy smell. It's amazing how intense it is. It's almost like a doggy fart but its coming from all over and, luckily, smells a bit better than a fart.

Hi, I am new to the forum and usually just reads the posts, but I had to reply. Our labradoodle pup is just 5 months old. He already weighs over 40 pounds. We were just having this discussion about a strange odor that sometimes comes from our pup, Jack. My son and husband have described it as a metallic odor. It doesn't occur every day, thankfully......did anyone find the cause? Jack was neutered at 4 months of age. I don't know it that was related.
I enjoy reading all the posts and I might add Jack is a handful. My collie plays with him, but the Wheaten runs away! |

Hi Jojo - welcome to the forum! You're probably already finding it's quite addictive, particularly when you find other people with the same doodle problems...yes, Charlie's funny smell is sporadic, I can't really pin it down to any particular circumstances. If he was a girl I'd think he was coming into heat, but he definitely looks like a boy

Anny, thank you for the welcome. I am curious..why is it that in some places they neuter so early....while here in Pennsylvania the vets don't neuter until 4 months? Yes , Jack is big and I am worried about just how big he will get. Although the dog that was the "love of my life" was half Lab and half St. Bernard. She was huge but a sweetheart.

Tuesday is usually licking her back end pretty good when its time. She is acually happy when she knows that I have figured her problem out and we head outside to fix the problem! |
