I have a 5 month old labradoodle puppy, Marley, who was spayed this past Monday. They gave me sedatives to help keep her calm during recovery, but we had to take her back to the vet this morning (Friday) because of bleeding from her incision - not a lot but enough for me to have concern. He told me to increase her sedative, keep her in the crate, wear an e-collar, etc. to try and avoid any activity and licking of her incision.
She is acting fine and would love to run if I'd let her, so she is feeling okay. But this evening she still had a small amount of bleeding from her incision. Have any of you experienced this? Our vet feels she has pulled stitches that are inside - is this common? I am just worried that I continue to see a little bit of blood at her incision and now a small knot at the bottom part of her incision/stitches. The vet didn't seem too concerned unless it got worse. I am just a worried first-time pet owner, and I am keeping her as calm as possible but she gets excited anytime we walk in the door or let her out of her crate. |

This is a very had time when we have to keep our doodles quiet. When we had Tia spayed she pulled a stitch because she jumped on the bed (it is tall). I did not crate her but at times I felt the need to leash her so she would not jump. She healed just fine. I would not let your pup run for awhile though. They seem to feel better before they can, or should play hard. It is up to us to keep them from hurting themselves. I hated every minute of that sad "I want to play" face because Tia could not do what she wanted to do. It passed and now we all are happy! Listen to your vet, but if you are worried get another opinion. You should listen to your instincts and keep asking questions.
Good luck |

Hi, welcome to our forum. I am sorry that you are worried about your baby...I hope that everything is okay.
I don't have much experience with spay, I am a breeder so my females are intact.I checked the net...here is one article, most of the other articles agreed with what is said here: http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/disease ... urerxn.htm Please keep us posted so that we know how your girl is doing. Best wishes! |

Thanks for your posts. Marley is hanging in there. She is not bleeding anymore from the incision as of last night, and right now it is just very, very swollen - so I am going to call the vet again in the morning just to explain how it looks now and see if they need to check it out again. I may be overly concerned but I just thought this would heal much better than it has. The last thing I want is for her to have to go back into surgery! She has done so well and has been so calm, but I can tell that even with the sedatives, she is really becoming very restless after a full week of this. So, fingers crossed that she is okay and that in another couple days she'll be a-okay to take this e-collar off and be healthy!

I hope Marley is ok. Keep calling and take Marley in if you have to to make sure she is ok. Maya's stitches looked a little swollen to me and I had to watch them over night and if they weren't better by the next day I had to take her in. She was better so I didn't go for anymore treatment. Good luck!!! And you only have a few more days left. Get lots and lots of chew toys and give her those. That is what I did for Maya.

I would be concerned about the swelling, especially with the bleeding that you had going on...I think I'd want the vet to check again, just to be sure.
Best wishes...hope that she is better very soon! |

WELCOME to the forum!
I hope all goes well with Marley. This is a tough time for anyone going through this as far as keeping a doodle calm. I have never had a female, so I don't know about the spaying, but I've heard it's more tough on the females then the males. Good Luck and keep us posted!

Go with your instinct............. mommy knows best! If it appears to you that her abdomen is swollen I would take her in, especially since she has experienced complications.
Today Annie is on her 8th day since being spayed. Thanks goodness she is doing great. It sounds like they were done in the same way. Stitches on the inside and glued on the outside. They gave Annie sedatives too, however I did not need to use them but twice. They said they didn't think she would need the cone. They feel that the cone stresses the dog out more and they will relax more if not wearing it. So when she started to lick the area I tied one of my tank tops on her. She had no problems with it and it kept her from licking. I hope my little bit of info helps. Its like having children when they are not well. They can't tell you how they feel. Please keep us posted as to how she is doing.

Glad to hear Marley is progressing. Lucy also was put on sedatives (she was up and wanting to play play play one hour after surgery!). She had a bit of bumpiness and some oozing but our vet was not too concerned. Now, a year and a half later, you can still fell where the most of the bumpiness was but nothing too significant. Sounds like Marley will be just fine!
