Default Peeing on the carpet

I know you're all goign to shake your heads at me being discontent at my nearly house trained 11 week old boy.. but the thing is that Hagrid just has one problem and I can't seem to break him of it/ get him to understand. He is pretty much totally house clean... if we don't have any rugs down. He goes to the door or goes outside himself most of the time, but he seems to think that we put the carpet there for his peeing conveninece. When we were staying with Peter's sister (no rugs) he didn't have a single accident in five days.. but when we got home he started peeing on the carpet in the living room. He doesn't pee anywhere else and he doesn't poop in the house. Since it was pretty natural for him not to have accidents in the house, I'm not really sure what to do so that he knows that peeing on the carpet isn't ok... I don't want to yell at him or anything.. I think he just doesn't get it.. he sincerely thinks we put it there for him to pee on!

We've thought about just taking it away for six months...

Any ideas?

Are you using anything on the carpet to neutralize the odours from when he pees on it?
He is doing really, really well for a 11 wk old boy. We thought Rusty was really easy to train.
He was fully trained at about 16 wks but he had a bladder that he could hold onto forever.
Rusty loved peeing on the carpet too but after a few times of getting caught in the act and he never looked back.
Has Hagrid been caught in the act of peeing on the carpet?
The key is to catch him midstream and clap your hands loud with a big "no"
He sounds like he's very clever and it won't take long for him to catch on.

Hi... Make sure you are using a cleaner that really removes the smell, otherwise he will come back over and over again... The suggestion of catching him in the act is really good.. At 11 weeks he is still very young and you probably have another 4 weeks or so before you can really trust him. When he needs to go, you will probably have 2 min before he actually goes. His bladder cannot hold for too long....

we had the same exact problem a year or so ago

1. till i found the Orange bottle of Nature's Miracle OXY power
we took the "pee pee" rug up and put it away
it worked like a dream.....max then trained to go potty outside within a day or two.

2. Urine be Gone works good too.....and seriously that Orange bottle of Nature's miracle works wonders along with taking out old stains

GOOD LUCK..hang in there!!

When Bailey was a puppy and doing the same, I think it was also AnnMarie that suggested playing with the puppy in that room (on that carpet) and giving him food/treats on that carpet. Dogs don't like to eat and pee in the same area so if it becomes a play/eating area he won't want to use it as a pee area anymore. Others have also blocked off rooms that puppies want to use as a bathroom.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone! I'll try the clapping and the playing and the big bottle of organe odor remover. He peed one more time today, so we finally just removed the rug completely.. how long do you think we should wait to put it (or a fresh new one) back?

Honestly...I would wait until he is really trained and has no more accidents...if you can stand to be w/o it for a month or 2 (or 3)

Three months it is then I don't really mind not having it.. it's cosier with it, but a puppy pee carpet isn't very cosy!

mernor....i removed an 8x10ft rug as it seems every dog I ever had peed on it including friend's dogs that came over

once it was removed max was potty trained.......i ended up throwing the RUG out! i eventually saw more on clearance and got another one.

Yup, That's what I would suggest too. The cleaner we use is called Natures Miracle. It seems to work well.

I ended up just tossing the rug.. it was an inexpensive one that I was getting a little tired of anyway.. but last night he peed in the same place anyway! We have laminate floor under where the rug was, so I washed it and sprayed it with an odor neutralizer.

Maybe this is considered cheating, but we leave the door to the back yard open so that he can go out whenever he has to pee. He usually takes himself out when he has to pee in the wee hours.. but my theory is that it was raining last night and he just didn't want to go outside. I'm going to put him back in bed with us tonight (he was sleeping there for a few weeks) and wake up to actually take him out when he has to go (usually around 4:00am). Hopefully this will get him back into the habit of going all the way out and we'll be able to re-transition to him sleeping beside the bed rather than in it!

I figure that by the time I've saved up for a new rug (10 million years) Hagrid will be fully house trained .

I've not had that problem with Abby. We have a neighbor who's a snowbird and his dog has peed on the hall carpet by our elevator. When Abby and I went out the day it happened she stopped to sniff which I immediately corrected preventing her from marking that spot. I then bought a product called BAC OUT from whole foods and cleaned the area myself. Next time out Abby did not stop to sniff telling me the stuff worked. Based on my experience I would suggest more frequent walking.

What do you do if they have already started? This happened on a walk with Fozie and because he was just doing the pee lean, I didn't realize that he was going to recreational piddle. That is a new sport for him. When I corrected him and we kept walking, he kept weeing! My eight month old boy has a big bladder that he doesnt seem to know how to shut it off. Needless to say, my leg and shoe got a shower! Don't want to recreate that accident again!
