Help! Winn Dixie is all over me while I'm driving. It's as if he wants to take over and drive the car for me! I tried to get him to stay in the back, but no way, he insisted on being in my lap.
What should I do? Thanks! Kay and Winn Dixie

I've pulled over several times because Sammy-Doodle tries to clim on my lap as well.
And I'm a fairly new driver at only 18!!! I have been advised by our fellow boardies to get a seatbelt harness that can hook right into the existing seatbelt in the car. It makes since to me. As someone on here said... "You wouldn't drive with an unbuckled child on your lap." If you do a search i'm sure you could find the other previous threads with more info on the harnesses!

You can put a doggy seatbelt on him and restrain him in the backseat for both your sakes. On "It's Me Or The Dog" today they said that an unrestrained 60 lb dog was like a baby elephant coming through your windshield if you should get in an accident. They said people have been beheaded as a result!
What I do and works with mine (because I've trained them for it) is that I ONLY let them ride in the backseat and I keep a rolled up newspaper beside me. If I see so much as a nose peek over the seat I swat them and they fly back. There's no way the paper can hurt them, but they've learned that they must avoid getting hit with it. Maybe it's the noise of it that startles them? Anyway, that's my most effective training tool.

I would try that but Sammy was abused before, so we can't speak to loudly or make fast movements or he gets really afraid...
So we have to go buy a seatbelt I guess. How much are those anyhow?

Here is one place I've found:
http://www.ruffrider.com/ It looks like Petsmart and Petco had them....I checked online. I wonder which one is best.

Oh I do'nt blame you a bit... he's already been through enough the way it sounds.
My dogs aren't scared of much... have all been lucky enough to be pretty pampered, so the paper shaken at them is just a reminder. If any were seriously scared of it I wouldn't have the heart to use it either. I found a couple of dog seat belts by checking on Google. http://www.hunterk9.com/site/870877/page/343881 http://www.autogeek.net/roadpetressy.html http://www.google.com/products?q=dog+se ... fox-a&um=1 Good luck!

we have a station wagon and our dogs ride in the back, so we don't use seatbelts. i looked into these two products, in case we had a problem with them trying to climb over into the back seat:
http://www.zootoo.com/dogs_traveloutdoo ... tingbarrie http://www.hatchbag.com/suvcargoliner_pet_barrier.php they're mesh barriers that look pretty easy to remove when your dog isn't in the car. turns out we haven't had a problem with our dogs climbing over yet, so i haven't needed to purchase one -- i can't say how well they work. i think a determined dog would be able to find a way around the barrier, so it seems like training would be necessary as well. -em |

I just got one of those small harness/pet seat belts that clicks into the seat belt think in the car. Put it on Louie for the first time yesterday and he did not seem to mind--so far, so good.
Had to do it...before, when riding around, he'd try to get into my lap, so I'd either end up driving like Britney Spears with the loved one in my lap, or taking one hand off the wheel to keep him in his seat. The restraint I got wasn't expensive, maybe $20, and it is similar to seat belt material. I think I found it at Amazon.com.

we have the following for our car:
Kirby - stays in the back of our SUV. He wears an EZ rider harness (purchased from ebay for $10-15). We also have an attachment that was made for the back of an SUV that connects his harnass to a hook in the car. Dexter - EZ rider harness (also purchased from ebay). He sits in the back seat and we have an attachment that snaps into the buckle of the seat belt and then connects to his harness. When we are lazy we connect their EZ walk harness to the attachment (only for short rides where we will be going for a walk). I don't remember where we got the attachments. Kirby would be in the front seat w/us if we didn't tether him.

Abbey, until recently, rides in a soft crate in the car. Now that she is a little older she rides in the car without the crate and she just curls up on the seat where the crate used to sit. I may look at the EZ car harness for safety. I've been leaving her in the car for short errands, but if I had to leave her for a longer period I'd put her in the crate.

I just ordered a Ruff Rider for Tyke - her crate takes up an incredible amount of room in the backseat to leave in there all the time! I will probably still use it for long trips, but at least going to and from work, I think she will be just as comfortable in her seat belt!

We use the guardian gear dog harness from petedge.com, they usually can be found on eBay as well.
http://www.petedge.com/Guardian-Gear-Do ... -ZW612.pro It was super inexpensive and has worked great for us. Securing the dog is safer for the dog and you in the event of an accident. Also - be careful letting a dog ride in a front passenger seat that has an airbag. Heather |

I have the fleece lined harness for our doodles which you put the seat belt thru it and then buckle it.
