Okay so you all know by now that Manchego has a love affair with eating poop that is not his own. I am working on 'leave it' which he is getting better at but we still have a long road ahead.
Since he is still eating poop when off-leash at the dog park when I have no control over other owners not picking up their poop, what can I do for a post-poop eating remedy for the irritable bowls and gas that he gets? I give them 1 tbs each of pumpkin and yogurt a day but this still isn't helping post-poop eating. Maybe there isn't anything I can do but I thought I'd ask. All suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks! Sarah

I wish I had an answer. I hope you get one soon, I will probably need the same advise soon. My boss told me about a dog park near her house, about a 1/2 drive or so from me that my cousin and I are going to check out this spring (I mean spring as in warms up some!). I'm mostly concerned with Miko. So far she only likes Jonah's and her own, but not Rumor's.

Two thoughts, first she's not getting enough nourishment from whatever you are feeding, second she's finding those leftover nutrients in the poop of other kibble fed dogs.

I have no advice...Dex will eat other animal poop (deer, rabbit, etc), but not dog poop. FYI - We need to get him a muzzle for the dog park (due to his tennis ball incident) and our vet suggested a basket muzzle.

No help but I find it incredibly annoying that people would take their dog to a dog park and not clean up after him/her. Around here, they would get kicked out.

Information Specialist University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine [quote]In the past it was believed that feces eating, also known as coprophagia, was caused by either poor diet or poor health. However, this theory is not supported by current research. "Behavioral research has discounted the idea that it is a dietary deficiency or a pancreatic enzyme deficiency," says Dr. Jo Ann Eurell, a veterinarian and animal behavior specialist retired from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. "Dogs are historically scavengers, and this is believed to be a scavenger behavior. It is more difficult to understand why adult dogs eat feces. Some dogs will learn this behavior from other dogs. In some cases, eating feces may be an attention-seeking behavior. For some dogs it is possibly due to anxiety or boredom. Most often the motivation for eating feces is just not known. "Eating feces is a problem that is easier to prevent than to cure," says Dr. Eurell. "Don't allow the opportunity to arise. Keep the dog's yard clean by disposing of feces promptly. Move the cat box out of the dog's reach. If cleaning the outdoor area is not feasible, then keep the dog on a leash or use a muzzle when outside." Hey You callin me OLD I'm sticking by my current info gleaned from hours of studying RAW diet pros and cons. One of the pros is they rarely have eating disorders like this. Most Vets have absolutely NO CLUE about nutrition. Their education was for the most part provided by Pet food company grants/scholarships, sponsored clinics and on and on and... I truly believe nutrition is more important than given credit for in both humans and non humans for preventing disease/disorders.
